My son was asking me today if balloons had been invented when I was a kid. So I started trying to think of things that had not been invented when I was a kid. Most of what I came up with were electronic/ tech stuff.

Can you guys think of any others?

I get in talks about this all the time with my wife and neighbor about how are kids are different today than when we grew up.

Aside from what you listed.

1. Definitely VCRs and being able to tape something, or watch a movie on demand is a big invention.

2. Remote controls. Have too many of the damn things. Even our $100 boombox has a remote. As kids we all used to spin that dial. )

3. Anything computerized in movies. Sometimes i miss the old models and innuendo...

4. All the new kinds of bikes you can buy. Cruisers, Road Bikes, Trail/City Hybrids, Commuters, BMX bikes, Electric Bikes, Segway, etc. As a kid you either saw a dirt bike, ala BMX, or Ten-speed bikes.

5. Being PC in kids sports. I was on a lot of sucky teams, and struck out a lot. But i thin k i am better for it. All this no one wins, everything equal has taken the drive out of our competitive spirit. Bad Bad invention.

6. Microwaves for home use.

I think the internet or rather the widespread consumer use of the internet is the most important invention of my lifetime followed by the cell phone.

I'd add that the cellphone camera to this list.

These are both so intertwined for me now that it is hard to calculate which is bigger.

I will say, I can go w/o the internet easier than I can without a phone..as long as I can email from the phone, too :)

Internet and it's not even close.

I could probably name lots of medical advances and their importance but in the end, nothing has made a mark on the planet (and in such a short period of time) than the computer and specifically the internet. It's had an effect on everyone on earth down to how we even communicate with each other. Not to mention how we conduct business and access information.

Although, as a young kid, I can remember our first microwave and VCR. Big moments.

Also, apparently Ibuprofen was introduced in 1974 in the US. Shout out to THAT guy.

Instant music & pornography. These kids don't know what it was really like. Stupid imagination.

Yeah, I can remember hauling the trash to the dump with my older cousin when I was around 13 (we really used to have to do that in rural areas) and finding a moldy Hustler with the outer edges of the pages burned off. Spent many a session with that thing. Sears catalog be damned.

I read this as "What INTERVENTIONS" have you had in your life.

all I have to say is I am glad they didn't have the internet or cell phones (in common use, that is) when I was in high school bc I would still be in 10th grade.

1. Internet
2. Cellphone

In terms of revolutionary. Internet trumps cellphone simply because information trumps all
