Sonic Youth - The Eternal
...Finally got my first listen of this today. I only listened through it once, but what a glorious once! This is what I wanted Rather Ripped and Sonic Nurse to be. While at first blush it might seem to retreat the mid-90s too carefully, this has an assurance to it that those albums lacked. (Don't get me wrong, I love that era, so this is high praise indeed). It also throws some new ideas into the mix that initially seem a bit out of place, but really end up working well. (For example, one track I thought would fit in well with the most recent Gomez album).

The Vandelles: Del Black Aloha

If you like Jesus & Mary Chain, Raveonettes and other similar stuff, you outta grab a listen to this. It's a bit up and down, sometimes the songs get lost in the noise. But when they're on, this sounds really good. Listen to Bomb the Surf for a great fuzzy Jesus & Mary Chain meets Dick Dale instrumental workout.

Sonic Youth - The Eternal
..I basically just have this thing on repeat.

But when I don't have that on repeat, I've also listened to:
Image
The Welcome Wagon - Welcome to the...
..It's like Sufjan. Except with a touch of Blanche. I like both, so the combination hits the spot.

Image
Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys - Feelin' Kinda Lucky
..it's like... awesome. Sounds as good as it looks, except better.

The Duke's Men: Small Groups Volumes 1 & 2

A pair of 2 CD collections, four discs in all, highlighting the small group sessions Ellington recorded in the 30s. As know as he was for his big band stuff, it's always the small group stuff of his that I continually come back to. If I had to trim down the Ellington in my collection, I'd be hard pressed not to keep both of these collections, along with his later collaborations from the 50s with Johnny Hodges, who also figures prominently on these discs.
