Had it horribly when I was a kid (hospitalized twice, once at 12, again at 14)

Improved for a long time, came back sorta recently and I take Advair for long term control and Astelin for nasal allergies.

Strangely, while allergies really suck, exercising in cold weather is a sure fire bet to make me run for the inhaler.

I was almost hospitalized last week.
allergies are outrageous.
I was training for marathon and couldn't walk down street

went down the street to doc instead of emergency room.

bunch of shots/prednisone round/advair/5 other things are helping. Still bad though. and a round of antibiotics to knock whatever else out.

I feel like I can't inhale the advair deep enough. how long does it take to work. I have been on it before but not needing it like this.

Yeah running in cold weather is beyond painful.

of course it all started when I was in fucking Boston a few weekends ago lol.

Yet another reason why bears hibernate in the winter.

mine wasn't horrible when i was a kid, i was only hospitalized once when i was 3 or 4. mom tried to get me to take it easy with sports, but i didn't listen and it never really held me back.

i think i've pretty much outgrown it, only needing my inhaler the morning after a drunken night where too many smoke's may have been involved. i get the cold weather thing sometimes too when i'm skiing.

Been living in a mold filled apt for the last year and a half(why we are moving into our new house in ten days hurrah) and have had NONSTOp sinus problems. Got so bad I have impacted sinuses, which showed up on an MRI I was taking.

The thing is, I've noticed that lately I wheeze here and there and feel worse when I'm inside the apt. I'm on heavy antibiotics right now for a horrible sinus infection and cough. And noticed the wheezing a bit more.

Could be something you've been exposed to triggering this.

I have chronic Asthma. I've been doing pretty good the last couple of years since I started taking Singulair once a day. My doctor determined that my Asthma was triggered by allergies during the Spring.

i've had chronic asthma all my life.

Advair works awesome for me, which is too bad, because it's pretty expensive.

normally it give me no problems, but if i go without my inhalers for 48hrs, i'm a dead man.

Mine kills me on a day like today, when it's humid. But by & large I do OK w/the Advair/Singulair dynamic duo.

I need to inquire about singulair.
I know this is all due to allergies and I know my sinuses have been fucked for years.
but now it's getting hard to live, let alone exercise.

Definitely look into Singulair. I had this shit for several years before a different doctor thought of trying it. It definitely works better in conjunction w/Advair than what I was doing before ( Albuterol inhaler ).

Never had a whiff of any of this shit, nor has the wife. Hopefully this means the same for the kid.

I reflexively wanted to punch a kid named Nathan in the face after viewing this thread. Though by kid, I mean 32 years old man with lips like an Octaroon -- but skin whiter than a sheet -- & mentality of a sociopath (just like his mom).

Also, Squirrrg, if you want to avoid asthma in the kid, let her/him eat lots of dirt & paint-chips. Build up the antibodies.

we had throught for quite awhile that our kid had asthma because at various times, usually after colds he would get really bad coughing spells, inability to breathe, choking, etc. we thought it seemed like asthma and our pediatrician treated it as such, basically. we went to a specialist, though, and he doesnt think its asthma at all and with the new meds our son is on, he hasnt had any problems with it for like 2 months. he said its extremely rare for a kid w/o asthmatic parents to have it...also the fact that it didnt seem to be triggered by running around indicated it wasnt.

lesson - go to specialists

yah, i've had it since i was a kid. never had what i'd call 'very bad' asthma. i would just need my ventolin inhaler no and then.

a couple of years ago I started having winter colds/flus turn into lung congestion and set off the asthma once a year, resulting in hospital visits, x-rays, and inhaled steriods. but at the time all that started I was working in one of the most smokey bars in montreal.

didn't have it happen this year, I made it through the winter without getting a real cold/flu, but as of yesterday I have one so... I'm hoping the asthma stays away.

Things I've found help A LOT and can basically keep most people off constant meds:

- stop drinking milk (find some other milk replacement you like - other dairy is usually okay, e.g. cheese, ice cream)

- exercise - yah, building up your cardio will help you kick asthma's ass. sure, the first couple of times you'll need to take it easy and stop and take some ventolin (actually it's often better to take it in advance of exercising) but eventually you'll be a champ. I jog all the time and never have to use my puffer (although cold weather is a little rough).

- coffee (yup, it's a vasodilator, just like the asthma meds, keeps those lungs nice and clear, and makes you happy). (without the milk, obviously)

- if you're sick: ginder-lemon tea (made with real ginger, boiled in water): clears the lungs.

- making out (um, not really, but I suppose you could claim it as cardio)
