It's a scam...

And I'm pretty sure she can reverse the charges from paypal. You ship the computer...She can make all kind of false claims (arrived damaged, not what she thought it was, etc....) and paypal will take the money out and give it back to her, and she'll have your computer...

general rule of thumb for craigslist......cash and in person only....

Perzackly. The available tar pits for even an amateur scammer to toss your ass into are myriad.

I'd put up ads around ball state (you still live near there, right?) Hang up a flier on campus.

Maybe offer her a discount, if she sends via the mail, US cash....certified of course..."she" should understand your hesitation in doing an overseas transaction, and you wanting to protect yourself...

No matter what you don't have to be rushed. If "she" wants one that badly, she can find someone else who can mail it off the second it appears they got the money. You never promised lightning-quick service.

I'd really scour the Paypal terms of service and all the fine print....i'm pretty sure they can go into your bank account , and reverse the charges still...All part of the agreement when you signed up...so, taking the money out of your paypal account may not totally protect you...

also, why is this woman looking through US listings for a computer? Really hard pressed to believe that this is the easiest scenario in getting a computer for her as well..

i'm done..good luck.

Dov is right on the mark here.
My best friend is a high-volume vintage clothing dealer on eBay (like, that's his job) and has detailed shit like this happening when he was first getting started.
Even once the check/money order clears they can claim the item was deficient in some way, get the transaction reversed and PayPal will suck their money back out of your bank account.
End result: they've got your computer and their money minus shipping.

Wait for an offer than doesn't raise any flags and go that route. As said earlier, in person is the only sure way to do things through Craigslist.

The replies in this thread worry me more than her e-mail.

There's a page on craigslist where they detail scams.

The language sounds iffy though. I hate it when people get all urgent.

I think I can safely speak on behalf of Dalen and say that we were both having some fun. Sorry if you got scammed, Phil.

I'm not the one that looks like they've got 4th grade level reading comprehension.

A victory for common sense. Now, if we can just get rid of Radiohead...

If you are still undecided...;) see my thread http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=42078

You could always take the money, never send the laptop, and see what happens.

Hey, the Bob Dylan palindrome thing is funny.

That one took some thought.

This is a scam, btw.
