Meh, I don't think you did anything to feel guilty about.

I've been in a similar situation in a restaurant where I go home feeling ripped off and DON'T end up complaining and feel sour for the rest of the night because I did nothing about it.

So either you pay up, don't say anything and feel like the business has taken advantage of you, or you stand up for yourself. Nothing wrong with standing up for what you know is right and how could anyone guess that the server is going to be fired if you complain?

You did nothing wrong in my opinion (especially given the fact that you mentioned how you had been treated very well by the same server in the past.)

conclusion:

1) The server is a constant fuck-up and this was the straw that broke the camel's back

OR

2) The manager/owner is a maniac

either way, not your fault.

Did you confirm the existence of the "large" (probably actually an Imperial pint, which is 20oz or *4* oz. more than a pint)? Sounds to me like this guy was lying to you, pocketed the extra 15 bucks, and got caught.

I'd have to consult with my wife the ex restaurant manager but this seems the most likely scenario and something she used to run into all the time: they ring in one thing, get your money, change what they rung in, pocket the difference.

This should have been handled at the restaurant; ask to speak to the manager on the spot next time. The way you handled it, it then becomes a big deal, and the manager is more inclined to do something like this termination, vs a quick 'change the bill' thing at the restaurant.

Think of a parallel situation, same girlfriend, she says something that comes out as semi-racist and offends you a bit. If you bring it up then, say something like 'wow, I am sure you didn't mean it that way, but you do realize that sounds a bit racist...' it is quickly dealt with and moved past. Now instead wait a day, tell her you need to have a talk, and sit down and bring it up...I am sure that you see the difference

For some reason this popped into my head on the commute in to work and I chuckled all over again.

Yes. Bear in mind that restaurant managers are probably constantly looking for an easy way to fire like half of their employees and you just gave them a perfectly easy way to do it.

I was going to make a "pieces of flair" joke but it's just so played out

this place is NOT going under. ever. it's always packed. it's the best bar in richmond to get awesome beers, and it's been named as one of the best bars in america by various beer magazines.

I'm going to make this as brief as possible and try to leave out the unnecessary details.

So I went to my local restaurant (that has a really good beer selection) on Sunday because they have American microbrew pints for $2-3.

Capital Ale House?

Were you at the downtown location? I haven't been in years (moved to MA in 04), but from what I remember, the service there sucks. You may have found the one good server there and got him fired. Awesome.

every time i've been there the service has been awesome... but i always sit at the bar, so i'm not sure how the actual servers are. the bartenders are usually great, though.

Next time grow a pair and confront the server instead of hiding behind your computer screen

this is a public service announcement.

yeah it was kind of a puss move to go back after the fact and complain rather than doing it right then and there.
