Man, I miss rapping with this guy from my days as a freelancer for him. As with most things, he's about 80% on the mark here. But even if you disagree, you have to enjoy the dude as a speaker.

Its the more general problem in journalism as well... the masses are asses and the internet has given them a platform...

This is why Whiney rules.
Great rant.

I dunno. He seems to be saying that baseless opinion without context is bullshit unless that baseless opinion without context is his.

Face it, journalism and rock criticism were killed by journalists and rock critics. You can't be that shitty for that long without losing your significance in the culture.

At the end he basically admits he's pissing in the wind at this point, so it's as much an autopsy as anything. My $.02: no one NEEDS critics to help sort through the ever-growing swell of music out there. Criticism can be a component along with blogs, friends, leaks, etc. but professional (paid) criticism only works well on a print model that can no longer keep up.

As for journalism as a whole; decades of profit-taking at 30%+ instead of reinvestment in products and market share expansion was the greatest culprit. Because of that, the tree roots were weak when the Internet tornado rolled through the industry and they had no idea how to adapt. But head over to the Iran thread and look at how well the handful of outlets with robust resources have handled this coverage. Journalists didn't kill journalism. Not by a long shot.

As usual, your insight is stellar.

For real; explain how they "did it to themselves"

actually, the Iran Election Twitter page has done a better job at getting the message out than any journalist. Many of the journalists are just following that page.

folks are no longer waiting for some news guy to relay info to them. the people are doing it themselves.

the only authority i've ever entrusted to anyone to sway my musical taste was that of a close friend or set of friends. and even that's becoming less frequent as time goes by

Nobody can sway my taste, but they can convince me to give something a shot, once I've come to trust their opinion.

I thought this was an interesting rant, but in the end, he is guilty of what he claims others are -- style and no substance -- especially with those twitter reviews.

I also think Whiney (and tons of other critics) fall into the 'you should be liking better stuff' trap, when in reality, his taste sucks :) (to me anyway)

And, there are a LOT of people who still buy newspapers, CDs, magazines, etc -- it's just become a harder ROI for the market like Chad said.

Also, if Twitter is the future of reporting, we're in deep shit.

Yep. Sometimes you need a goddam professional.

I thought it was an awesome rant by Whiney. Mofo brought his "A" game, though I will admit the trucker hat was probably not the ideal garb for supporting some of his points.

Also, the crux of Whiney's argument here is brilliantly set to music in "Demons Out!" off the new Art Brut album.

Not sure if this was at all directed at me but I feel the need to post anyway.

My point was that Twitter is just a bunch of random updates from people. There is no source, fact checking, or accountability. I'm not saying that the reports coming in via Twitter weren't true but they aren't reliable.

CNN took a beating for supposedly not covering the elections close enough and people praised Twitter for being so fast and getting immediate reports but they were unreliable for the most part. News stations are, for the most part, bound by facts and hopefully truthful reporting.

Also, Iran officialy banned the foreign media and threatened to throw anyone caught filming in jail so most news outlets couldn't cover it if they wanted to. They also jammed many of the cell phones in Tehran and shut down cell service in many areas so where were the reports coming from.

Just saying that Twitter can be a useful tool but I'm not ready to kick the news networks to the curb just yet.

the networks are using (in the case of Iran) much of what has been tweeted. are they fact checking everything coming from there? i wonder.
