Oddly enough, that was the nickname of this girl I once dated in college.

A Gangster film that's probably a little slow and understated for some people, but there were some excellent performances in this. Tim Roth's first film, and he played the perfect jumpy hit-man. Terrance Stamp was brilliant also.

Finally seeing this. Released on DVD for the first time, after being out of print for about 3 decades.

Can't say that's its stellar, but it is gorgeous. The cinematography is flawless, and while the DVD is horrendous by way of special features, the transfer is amazing. Wish I could see this on a huge screen.

This was released in 1970, and pretty much wrecked the career of Michelangelo Antonioni. Both the FBI and MGM were on his back, and made tons of cuts. Obviously, this being a "counter-culture" film, the leftist politics are front and center with the Mark character.

The message I perceived (and trust me, with the lack of linear story-telling, this is a perception), it is easier to play the part than be the part. This is in terms of being a revolutionary. Its one thing to sit around smoke pot, draw peace signs, and talk about revolution--but its a whole different thing to be the revolution, and go out and disrupt the world.

The soundtrack has been pressed a couple different times. I think the last reissue was back in the mid 90s. Soundtrack features score by Pink Floyd, and songs by John Fahey, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Roscoe Holcomb, and others. There are points when this things feels like a giant music video, which just fine with me, when you've got that caliber of music.

*edit* also has Rod Taylor in the film, who is unfortunately under-utilized.

in theory I should have loved this...love Maya Rudolph, crush on John Krasincki (however you spell it)...Dave Eggers, etc.

it was pretty disappointing. Just, meh, boring.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is hilarious in it, same with Allison Janney...but other than that, kind of pointless like stated above, they just sort of pieced it together.

This, however, was awesome:

i had absolutely no expectations about away we go and didn't even know what it was about going into, so i guess that factored into my great enjoyment. plus, that trampoline scene was really excellent.

as for disappointment, i'd say public enemies. it's a big summer movie with great action scenes that aren't enough to make up for an otherwise weak script with a lot of holes.

Absolutely stunning, and essential viewing. Secondarily for the great animation that wasn't rotoscoped, but primarily for the story. In the US, we are in the unfortunate position of teaching our children only essential history, which really boils down to US History and some world history. Unfortunately events like Cambodia's killing fields and Beirut are usually left off the agenda. Its films like this that attempt to remedy that situation through well-written (most of the stories were real, however), and thought-provoking situations.

Watched The Pursuit of Happyness last night.
Not bad. Wife loved it. 10-year-old liked it a lot. 7-year-old was bored.
Will Smith was actually pretty good in it, I thought.

OK, so my wife and I stood in line to see Transformers 2 late Friday night.

Now, knowing what horrible reviews it's gotten (much worse than the first one) and that it's... well, Transformers, I know I don't exactly have a right to come out complaining about it. And I'm not, really. We knew what we were in for. I just feel like this movie achieved certain levels of awfulness that were truly remarkable.

1. It contained the single most unrealistic depiction of college that I have ever seen, anywhere. Take the most glossed-up, uber-rich, sitcom-y, TV show or teen movie, and it doesn't come close. This was absolutely awe-inspiring.

2. It made George Lucas seem like a perfectly capable director of human interaction, drama, and dialogue.

3. In a movie about robots, managed to mention or derive some kind of gag out of testicles at least a dozen times. One of the robots even had "balls".

And we didn't hate it, despite the fact that it was way too long, focused way too much on the hackneyed human characters, and really made us feel like we were way too old to be there. I mean, we love plenty of animated movies, and we enjoy our fair share of superhero and action flicks. This was just so patently juvenile and crass that it gave Hulk Hogan's No Holds Barred a run for its money as the movie that's simultaneously too profane for kids under 12 and too dumb for anyone over 13. At least it moved at a good enough pace (for most of the movie), that it's badness could be entertaining.

We saw Land of the Lost yesterday.
Not a great movie by any stretch; and not "true to the original" either, if you're that kind of geek.

The Sleesaks were scarier and had more teeth than the TV show. There were a lot of sex and poop/piss jokes. Your standard helping of faux homoeroticism played for laughs. And, you know, just about exactly what you'd expect from the movie.

Bottom line:
If you're a fan of Will Ferrell's pompous guy/Anchorman schtick, you'll enjoy it. If not, don't bother. I laughed.

I didn't like the trampoline scene per se...very forced sentimentality, I guess the whole movie was, which is very Eggers, actually!

I know there were some dissenting opinions on this. I think duckyboy really liked it. So did stu I think. Here's what I posted back in January:

Quote:
Saw this over the weekend. It's been slobbered over by almost every critic imaginable and already won several awards and should be favored to win the Oscar for best Foreign film.

That being said, MEH.

I thought the animation was beautiful at times but most of the time I found it distracting and very graphic-novel-esque. I also thought the psycho-therapy angle wore a bit thin. I know that the whole thing was about detachment and memory from traumatic events, etc but I just felt that the dream sequences were just too distracting and didn't go anywhere.

I realize that's kind of the point and the whole thing just feels dream-like by the director's choice I'm sure but I just found myself looking at my watch a few times. The final 60 seconds was more powerful than what it implied through the whole movie which was by design I guess.

It was very well done and the only way a flick like that could accomplish what it does is by making it animated. I'm glad I saw it but I have no desire to see it again.

I swear movie critics have to review and wade through so much dreck that when a movie like this comes along they use up every poetic license they can to describe the power of film or something. The reviews are so over the top.

I know Konsty wasn't as near as nice as I was in his take on it. It's certainly a pretty unique watch but I almost fell asleep.

watched transformers two last night...I was already aware that it was basically an action film and mostly about the graphics and stuff, so I didn't really expect much from it...it was ok to spend some time watching it...but I will not watch it again like I did with other movies.

Yeah, there were some stretches that seemed really dull despite all that was going on, but I thought that was just because we went to a late showing and were really tired.

Pretty good. I don't know if Altman was the first to use this kind of interweaving storytelling technique, but this was really well executed. Film's like Crash owe Altman a world of debt if he was the first.
I'll have to check out Nashville next.

for a blockbuster summer action movie that spend a zillion bucks on effect this is a pretty hefty indictment--if understated.

i made it about 20 minutes or so into boondock saints and had to turn it off. holy fucking shit what a turd of a movie! had seen overnight recently, too, and now it totally get it. troy duffy. . . what a freakin' hack director and a huge douche.

I thought that scene was incredible, and incredibly effective.
She was standing there, naked, telling her husband that she'd been cheating on him.

It was like the offending bits (pardon the awkward language) were staring him -- and all of us -- in the face as she told about how she hurt him with all of that.

I thought it was an amazing scene. And, honestly, not at all a turn-on, strictly because of context. It hurt to watch.

Drug this out of the archives a few nights ago. One of my favorite low-key comedies.
