The current popmatters review of this album pretty much sums up my feelings on it.

Lots of mentions of "sturdy", "solid", and "return to form" all over the net but in the end, for me, it just kind of fits in with their last few albums; some great songs mixed with some faceless filler.

I'm not that familiar with his other work other than a song here or there but I'm liking this one. If you're a fan of journeymen singer/songwriters then I think you'd dig this. The guy just has a warped sense of humor and a cracked/slacker view of life that comes through in all his stuff. So many just great tossed off lines.

He's covers Robert Earl Keen's "Corpus Christi Bay" on here and it's been played a lot so far this year. Solid take on it.

Loretta Lynn makes an appearance and Don Was helped produce it. Having him on board I think gives the overall feel of something more than just coffee house guy with guitar. Feels more fleshed out and arranged.

i gotta agree with you there, and add in that pitchfork kinda nailed it by claiming they sound "comfortable". i mean i like it and all, more and more with each listen...but they are definitely settling into a little niche here with their sound. i'm hoping and expecting that seeing these songs performed live will boost them further for me. they usually do.

Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures.

My favorite Joy Division. Nothing to say about this band or this album that y'all don't already know.

Thanks- I have a few of his earlier releases and like them. The last I bought was 2006's The Devil You Know, and it put me off some, for reasons I forget right now. Talented guy.
