Certainly the biggest death since Elvis. Not just for being the (self-proclaimed?) King of Pop, but the length of his career... Longer even than Elvis's. MJ was playing out by the time he was ten, no? We've spent four decades watching him evolve, & got some pretty sweet tunes in the process (unfuckwithable for more than a decade, from, what '75 into the mid-to-late 80s?). It's like a death in the family. (Sure, the creepy uncle, but still, family.)

Also: who do we expect to see at the funeral? Quincy Jones is a given, & prolly his daughter, Rashida, which could mean, oddly, a gaggle of the Apatovian chuckle factory (Rogen, Rudd, Segal, Hill, et. al.). Stevie Wonder. Will Smith. Bill Clinton. All the Jacksons, of course -- even Janet.

Who else? Will Michelle Obama be there? (Obviously, Barack cannot, but what of the First Lady..?)

There is an absolute zero chance of this happening.

I don't know. It could be like Liz Taylor's last wedding, where people we all thought had been dead for 20 years were invited, & showed.

I'm expecting an absolute train-wreck. It will start lovely, prolly get a piano medley from Stevie, at some point, but it will devolve into an utter mire.

& I'll love it, for being fitting. I still want that light-up aisle for the casket escort, though.

I heard a phone interview with Quincy in which he said he would that didn't attend funerals any more.

Can you blame him? I mean, he's got to deal with death EVERY DAY...

Bob. Sometimes I think you're actually older than I am. This is one of those times.

Found this linked at TalkingPointsMemo, of all places.

Billie Jean for solo piano. Pretty sweet. I was expecting, given the set-up, something on the order of the archly-ironic DEVO take on "Satisfaction", or Mark Koselek's maudlin AC/DC re-imaginings, but, no... Depressive, but not morose, with lively key-plinking.

I saw a few bands this weekend do tributes, but the only one that was even remotely cool was by Biz Markie.

It just hit me that Chuck Berry is still alive.

my friend pointed out that Liz Taylor outlived MJ. Which is crazy in and of itself.

I had a discussion with people about MJ's enormous world and referenced that video as never being able to occur again. He was bigger than big, and obviously even the biggest sorta-stars of the day--Carl Weathers--were star struck by him. Doubt that will happen again.
