So I suppose you'd try to make an argument that 1) Pet Sounds is drastically different than that and not "catchy" and 2) the pre-Pet Sounds albums actually hold together as albums and aren't full of some awful filler. Or that Surf's Up doesn't have a song about taking care of your feet and "Disney Girls".

I think you were right when you said that its not close to their worst album. They continued releasing albums into the late 90's after all. However, Pet Sounds is mostly drastically different than the "cars and girls" and faux surf songs that Nobody likes. I hate that crap but I'm neither surprised that Nobody likes it more or think it unreasonable for someone to do so.

Beach Boys best albums would've actually been Smile and then Landlocked, had they been released as they were, but as the catalog stands (y'all should really listen to the Landlocked boot sometime)

1) sunflower
2) pet sounds
3) today
4) carl and the passions - so tough
5) wild honey
6) holland
7) friends

those are the ones worth mentioning. the rest are flawed messes with occasionally good songs. Surf's Up would be worth mentioning if it wasn't for Mike Love and the Worst Song Ever Recorded.

Pet Sounds beats Bringing It All Home, but not many other Dylan albums, imo.

The 15th best Dylan album (hell, maybe the 20th best too) blows away the best Beach Boys album. That said, I might rank BIABH as high as #2 in the Dylan catalog and I'd rank Pet Sounds #3 at best in the BB catalog and probably not that high.

Oh, I agree that most Dylan albums are much more sufficient and hold a harder ground than the Beach Boys (see my post above). I also feel like PS has gotten a bad rap as of recent because of how heralded it has become. Its built up to be a magnificent masterpiece, and granted, its not for everyone.

Also, yr classifying a very "singles" band with an AOR artist. PS is definitely the strongest album-all together-that the BB put out. Sorry.

It's the only album that is truly a band effort.

Pet Sounds is essentially a Brian solo album.

I still have a lot of love for Pet Sounds, but on his best day, Brian Wilson couldn't hold Dylan's brainstem.

Well, it's pretty slippery, and Brian's got shaky hands.

I just personally have never really enjoyed listening to Beach Boys albums. For me, I like the early surfey singles and that's about it. I don't care how well an album holds together if I don't like what I'm hearing. Just my opinion and I really don't give a shit if you agree or disagree. But, no amount of spilt ink can make my ears like something they don't care for.

And yeah, not really one of my favorite Dylan records either.

That's what I'm talking about though. Are people saying, I like Dylan better than Beach Boys, or are they critically looking at Pet Sounds against Bringing It All Back Home.

Many times its synonymous, but I just wonder how many time people just look at the artist and say "oh yeah I like him/her/them" and vote for whatever they put out, even if they listen to the album like once every 10 years.

Well, OK. I certainly get preferring the early singles over their PS-and-later stuff, but you did say it was their worst album. I just kinda take issue with that because before that they were a singles band, and afterward everything they put out had some pretty big problems and at least one or two awful songs. And what billy g said.

I'd be interested to hear which Beach Boys albums you've actually thoroughly listened to, because they are pretty all over the map and difficult to categorize after 1966.

I mean, throw on Carl and the Passions at a party and try to see if anyone in the room can even guess it's a Beach Boys album. I'm guessing no.

That's cool, and I can respect that, but I was just pointing out to yr statement that you like their songs about "girls and hot rods", that Pet Sounds is full of songs about girls and love.

bringing it all back home is perhaps dylan's best album. you cant fuck with this:

Side one
"Subterranean Homesick Blues" – 2:21
"She Belongs to Me" – 2:47
"Maggie's Farm" – 3:54
"Love Minus Zero/No Limit" – 2:51
"Outlaw Blues" – 3:05
"On the Road Again"– 2:35
"Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"– 6:30

Side two
"Mr. Tambourine Man" – 5:30
"Gates of Eden" – 5:40
"It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" – 7:29
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" – 4:12

Historically, it's probably just as "important" as Pet Sounds, too.

for example, I would have voted for Pet Sounds over most albums not made between 65-67.

I can and will. And thank you for the tracklisting like a)I don't own this, and b)never listened to it. Its not one of my favorite Dylan records. Sorry. I like Pet Sounds better than this record.

Actually, that's not been my experience. Most people respond pretty well to this album, even if they profess a deep-founded hatred of the Beach Boys, because it sounds nothing like them whatsoever, which is why I throw it on occasionally in a social setting.

Back to the point though: I don't think it's a bad thing to choose either album in this case.

maybe if pet sounds was up against Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot it wouldnt be that bad.

No, but if you have the double disc with "Holland" on it -- LOOK OUT!

Fair enough. I was only half kidding. "So Tough" and "Holland" have been the butt of more than a few jokes between Gar, Bloor, and I.

Still, there is a difference between someone finding it interesting because it doesn't sound like The Beach Boys than actually finding it really good.

IMO, those albums sound like a band that doesn't really know what they want to be. They're trying to be kind of earthy ala the Dead or The Band or something. They're still great musicians and I really like "Marcella" but for the most part I found them pretty listless.

Although, I lost my burned copy of "Holland" a few years ago and haven't listened to it in a long time but it deserves mockery if only for some of the song titles. We're talking MASSIVE drugs involved here.
