I haven't listened to a ton of stuff that has come out this year but a few that stand well above the others for me:

1. Jim O'Rourke and Loren Connors-Two Nice Catholic Boys
2. James Blackshaw- The Glass Bead Game
3. Sunburned Hand of the Man- A Grand Tour of Tunisia (seriously, best work they've done in years)
4. Six Organs of Admittance-RTZ
5. Rafael Anton Irisarri-Hopes and Past Desires
6. Tim Hecker-An Imaginary Country
7. Animal Collective-Merriweather Post Pavilion
8. Richard Youngs-Sleep Deprivation
9. Temple Music-Incompleteness
10. 6majik9-A Solid Space

Well, shit- turns out 2 of my favorites that I THOUGHT were 2009 relelases are listed as 2008- Ian Tyson's Yellowhead To Yellowstone, and Toni Childs' Keep the Faith. And 2 new-to-me ones getting the most play lately that I already knew wouldn't work for this year- Josh Ritter's superb debut from 2002, and Chuck Prophet's Soap & Water from 2007. Doesn't leave me much here. The order could jumble in any fashion as well:

Ben Nichols- Last Pale Light Of The West
Felice Brothers- Yonder Is The Clock
Willie Nile- House of a Thousand Guitars
Justin Townes Earle- Midnight At The Movies
Steve Earle- Townes

Need to listen to the Son Volt, still, and waiting on the postman for the new Levon Helm that I have high hopes for. Also anxious for the new Magnolia Electric Co.

I may have to get that O'Rourke/Connors from emusic. I've been wondering about it.

Nice to know you like the new Sunburned. I haven't thought about them in a while, and I think I'd be in the mood to hear something new of theirs.

I guess between you and jsh, I'm thinking maybe I should listen to that Six Organs. His last one just really left me cold.

Just got that Tim Hecker, and the first listen was really nice, as expected.

I gave Litany of Echoes several tries, but I ultimately decided that James Blackshaw wasn't really for me. It's nice music, but I don't really have a desire to go back.

It mines his old sound for some gems, released and unreleased. Ragas and dirges abound. Bells and jangles and multiple layers. Night Trembling in full, next to You Can Always See The Sun, and stuff like that, all arranged to form a really deep, psychedelic, seamless 3LP. You may think it's the best thing he's done in years.

So the fact that only Bee and Spoon have the new Decemberists album listed means that I'm either going to love it, or hate it.

I think I'm wearying of Decemberists/Firey Furnaces/Death Cab/Sufjan/Bird kind of stuff and that sort of thing is moving further down my taste scale. Don't dislike, just getting "affected singer-songwriter" fatigue.

I just want to point out that I have loved Phoenix for like 10 years (due to their Air connection) and everyone teased me and suddenly they put out a "meh" album and they're all over the placed.

that said, I have no top 10 list yet. I am too lazy.

for what it's worth, I'm still making fun of them.

03. Dodos - Time To Die
04. Dino Jr. - Farm
05. God Help The Girl - s/t
06. Sick Sick Birds - Heavy Manners

09. Bishop Allen - Grrr...
10. jj - jjn2
11. Radio Faces - Party At The Bushwick Hotel (if this indeed counts as a 2009 album)

plus there's tons of honorable mentions, that may or may not make the final top 20 at the end of the year - andrew bird, animal collective, bonnie prince billy, dear landlord, decemberists, eels, john doe & the sadies, noah and the whale, son volt, the thermals....

i still stand by my theory that 2009 has a ton of GOOD albums but very few GREAT albums, especially compared to '07-'08. however, there's still a bunch of time and stuff that can really shoot up my charts.
