yea i mean, both are good albums. but daydream nation is some next level shit.

one thing interesting about these brackets is the difference they make in comparison to our listmania's of years past. i mean when we did the first listmania at cmj in 2000 or 2001 or whenever, Soft Bulletin was our #7 album of all time i think. But I'm pretty sure it will lose to Daydream Nation here.

Sort of silences the fanatics (for better and worse)

Damn. Unfortunate match-up, but Daydream Nation takes it pretty easily.

I don't have much use for SY, and this is one of the most overrated albums of the 90s.

I like the Lips in general, but I could go the rest of my life hearing nothing else from either of these bands and be perfectly content.

Soft Bulletin is my #1 album, evah. They win versus the band that changed how I listened to music forever.

Thanks for the shitty match-up, OPA.

there's nothing dissonant about Daydream Nation. It's just not toe tapping, handclapping am fluff.

cant say I love either of these, but SY is easily better than Soft Bulletin, a highly overrated album.

Soft Bulletin was sonically interesting, but the start of me finding the lips boring. They were much better as a noisy rock band.

Not my favorite Sonic Youth album, but it's pretty damn good.

I went with Sonic Youth.

A decade ago I would have said Soft Bulletin but I'm coming back around to some albums I loved 20 years ago.

Sonic Youth.

To me, if it ain't AM Gold, it's dissonant. haha

But seriously, SY was ruined for me when I saw them open for Neil Young and Crazy Horse on the Ragged Glory tour. It may have been an off night, but they were just so terrible, I can't overcome the scarring of my musical psyche. See, Neil also makes loud, often brash noise, but I am still able to hear the melody within and appreciate its beauty as such.

Most of the SY I've ever heard just sounds like a bunch of tazed Capuchins playing damaged pawn shop instruments through severly blown amps.

For the record, the Merriam-Webster definition of dissonant by which I am using the word is "harmonically unresolved," which I think perfectly suits Sonic Youth.

I don't like either band, but I own Daydream Nation for once a year listening.
