AMG touts this album as the precursor to Post-Rock. Listened to a few samples on Amazon but I can't really get a feel for it. Anyone know if it's worth the purchase from Amazon? They have it used for around $7.

Good Lord, yes.

It's worth far more than that.

Yeah, beautiful album. It's gentle, ambient music in some ways but with a dark undercurrent, strewn with emotional outbursts. It completely envelops you in a timeless soundscape which washes your mind clean of the daily distractions and fills it with beautifully developed images of hope and despair ... sometimes both at the same time. They made another even quieter one after this then it was a long time before Mark Hollis finally released a very nice solo in, I think, 1998. But his cohort in creating that sound, Tim Friese-Greene, went on the help shape the sound of Catherine Wheel, who were big fans of that latter day Talk Talk sound. So if you don't know them, definitely check out those first two CW records too. Chrome especially is one of my all time faves. Harder rocking and less ambient than Talk Talk, and without the jazz elements, but very cool. Kind of a combo of My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd.

There's a few different versions out there of Spirit of Eden. My current copy says it was digitally remastered in 1997 by Phill Brown and Denis Blackham at Country Masters from the "original 1/2" analogue masters" and distributed by EMI Records in Europe, but has been available in the US as a relatively low cost import and I guess was later released here as well. In any case, the 1997 remastered import sounds great to me. And there's a highly acclaimed 2003 European reissue in the hi-rez SACD format as well, but very pricey. But all the versions sound pretty nice.

I love Davey posts because he explains what things sound like with insight information as well.

Where have you been? Either way I’m glad to see a post again and pretty sure I’m not the only one.

It's not out till April 4 or so but it's been leaked for months. It is quite a good follow up effort but it lacks strong singles like 'Carrion', 'Remember Me' and 'Fear Of Drowning'. I haven't listened to it that much so it might be a grower i dunno.

Yeah I love how much effort he puts into his posts, unlike me. I can kinda see the influence on CW now that you mention it too. Too bad he's wrong about Chrome being better then Ferment though.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I l;istened to Davey's advice a few years ago on Spirit of Eden, superb albu...I found it on used vinyl for two bucks, one of the best buys ever.

If you want more Davey, you should hang here: http://forums.audioreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=40

Well, I didn't actually say that, but I do like it better these days. Just seems so much more expansive and has a stronger connection to Pink Floyd in songs like Fripp, which I also like. But the title track is where it all really comes together for me in the music and lyrics and vocal, and just the whole feel and swagger that make them a great band for me. Love the dark, intense, churning and ultimately liberating sound of "Chrome". I remember times when I have just listened to that one song over and over, especially in my car with it cranked high. Initially to try and decipher enough of the lyrics to figure out if they matched the mood of the music, and they do. It's one of those pieces of music that doesn't really even need lyrics to convey exactly what it is about, it's just so obvious. Mesmerizing. I don't think Rob Dickinson ever again matched the lyrical strength he showed on this spectacular set of songs. Each one is special, and for an album that nearly defined the early 90s for me, it still sounds surprisingly fresh and vital.

'Cos if I had some time
I'd use it this time
Escape to something beautiful
'Cos underneath the steel and rust and oil and shit
There's chrome, just shining chrome.....
(pause a few moments for guitars, lots and lots of lovely shiny guitars)
A mirror finish of my own
Alive inside this chrome, home, home, home.

Hey, thanks Bee. Haven't been dropping by much lately cause I'm quite a bit older than most of you and I'm not really into all the pop culture type discussions. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just not quite my style. But always fun to catch up on a little when I do drop by.

Yeah, Spirit of Eden is a classic. I was on a little bit of a Talk Talk kick towards the beginning of the year. The earlier stuff didn't do a whole lot for me (even Colour of Spring), but their last two albums are essential.

Of course, Laughing Stock is just a tiny bit better, IMO.

Also, I have the '97 remasters of It's My Life and Spirit of Eden, and both sound better than the presumably older version of Colour of Spring I have. It kind of sucks ordering them online, because you'll really have no idea which version you're getting. I've found that vendors even mistakenly list US album versions as UK versions, so I'm always skeptical about other little details like that with Amazon and Half.com.

$7 is a deal either way, though, so go for it.

I have been there once or twice but it is way too slow. I really only need this board with a post every-once-in-a-while to ILM.

Are you sure? See this for age: http://obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4462

I think the pop culture thread are the best part of this board because of the intellect, so to each his own.

Yes it is but that was my first listen, despite having it for about a month now. Opinion is not formed yet but pretty good so far.

Jimmy is also on crack.......care to be more specific with your CW hatred Jimmy? What do ya hate about them? Obviously(from my username) I'm a huge fan...I'm sure you've got legitimate reasons for your hatred - I'm just intrigued to hear what they are :)

Cheesiest vocals of the era, boring songs which last way too long, horrible lyrics- not a good band IMHO. Lots of people like them though, but to even have them in the same conversation as Talk Talk is laughable to me.
