But seriously, SY was ruined for me when I saw them open for Neil Young and Crazy Horse on the Ragged Glory tour. It may have been an off night, but they were just so terrible, I can't overcome the scarring of my musical psyche. See, Neil also makes loud, often brash noise, but I am still able to hear the melody within and appreciate its beauty as such.

Most of the SY I've ever heard just sounds like a bunch of tazed Capuchins playing damaged pawn shop instruments through severly blown amps.

I saw them when they headlined Lollapalooza in '95 and they were fucking unbelievable. I still think about that show and wish I was back just for a few minutes to take it all in.

it's tough to judge a band by an opening performance

if they can blow your hair back, more power to them - - but it's hard to play to a crowd while people are finding their seats, waiting to see someone else, and hoping you'll get off the stage.

SY...favorite band, and the album that busted my head open for them 15+ years ago.

I don't have much use for SY, and this is one of the most overrated albums of the 90s.

Sorry, the Sonic Youth nerd in me has to point out the album released in '88. So late 80s, yes. But I'm not going to allow it to be a part of the 90s catalog.

Anyway, Daydream Nation is probably in the lower third of their albums as I rank them... but SY is my favorite band, so Daydream Nation is still the easy pick. Made easier by my hate of The Flaming Lips.

vice-versa for me

You hate rock music.

Love rock music.

Hate pointlessly dissonant noise.

Such a stupid thing to say.

Teenage Riot is one of the flat out best rock and roll songs, possibly ever.
