Diggin' this. Gonna play it on my way out tonight. Good, up-beat and fun retro soul pop.

Vanessa Vajayjay Brown is a singer, a songwriter, a performer, a multi-instrumentalist and a producer, who first came to attention after landing an upfront slot on Later With Jools Holland. Her performance on the show won her a lot of admirers, including Damon Albarn, who invited her to perform on his Africa Exprez adventure in Lagos. Though music has always been a big part of V Vs life, with early influences including Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley and, just as importantly, the music from Super Marioland.

Travelling Like The Light, is a perfect introduction to the 25-year old’s sound. In this young lady’s world, love sounds like the perfect melody. Both are difficult to define she says, but both pour out of the songs on her debut album. This is music which sounds like performance: dramatic, charismatic and, frequently, as mad as a box of frogs. This is high definition, high concept pop with scuffed edges and laddered tights. V V describes her music as "musical mashed potatoes", which must, therefore, make her songs "smash hits"--but there’s nothing instant or synthetic about these pop tunes. Her songs are instantly addictive and unmistakably honest, with lyrics asking "what the bloody point is" answered by melodies full of life and reasons to be cheerful. The contradiction works, throwing the listener from happy to sad and back again in the space of three minutes.

i thought it was alright. some of it seemed kind of routine and i'm not sure her personality came through in all of the songs.
shark in the water is great though.

I have to apologize for assuming you were making a dumb joke.

She really did kill at Bonnaroo. One of the best sets I saw all two days I was there.

Man, I saw her at SXSW and had good (but not huge) expectations after hearing quite a bit about her.

Soooooooooooooooooo disappointed.

Great performer and show-woman, but the songs just weren't there. I can see where she wins people over through brute force of persona, but it just felt like something was missing.

As for V.V., I played "L.O.V.E." at the bar last night right after Black Joe Lewis and it got some butts moving. Definitely has promise.

This did not hold up well after 3 listens for me. It's not like I hate it, but it just got really boring to me real fast.

It holds up for me, but is a bit spotty. Some really good stuff that is gonna keep sounding good, but a few petty generic sounding tunes that keep the album from really kicking my ass as a whole.
