not when you look at the rest of the results -- lotta people around here with horrible taste who apparently only have one working digit, ie, enough to click to vote but not write a coherent statement in favor of their vote.

Not that it'd matter one whit. Bad taste is bad taste.

I mostly agree with you here. I'm puzzled though on how you feel comfortable making such statements when you are one of the first people to get high and mighty when Radcliffe makes a similar statement about a band you might like.

Not that I keep copious notes or anything, but I'm not recalling many instances where Rads and I have gone a few rounds over music. I might get into his shit for being an overbearing grouch from time to time, but musically we're not that far off.

My bigger point - and one it seems that you, Rads and enough others to notice agree with - is there's a lot more voting than discussing going on. In a lopsided matchup ("Yield" vs. whatever it lost to, for example) there's not much that you'd expect to be said. But for races that are close, feature a couple heavyweights or where upsets happen, I dunno, it'd be nice to hear some input from what's been dubbed the silent diary scribbling constituency.

And yeah, I'll own up to having my nose out of joint over this one. I heard 'PTMM' at a precise moment in my life when I was unknowingly looking for just what it had to offer and it pretty much rewired my brain from its first notes. Compare that to 'YHF,' which I've always held as an OK but unexceptional (and thus overrated) album. So for me the ultimate result of this matchup is pretty hard to fathom even if it was inevitable given the board's love affair with mid-late period Wilco. I feel strongly about it and I've said my piece, which is more than some have done.

It was a tough choice for me, but it's the weak songs like 'Shooting Dirty Pool' and the knowledge of the superior alternate takes of 'Can't Hardly Wait' and 'Alex Chilton' that slightly drops its esteem. But none of that should matter really because YHF has weak songs as well and both band's albums are often compared to their previous work, usually unfavourably. I don't know why, but the overall gestalt leaves me more satisfied with the Wilco album.

Voted early in this one, and just popped back in to see the results. I've never been more disappointed in Obner.

Except it wouldn't be much fun if we all voted the same way, would it? If it isn't one thing, then its something else for people and their high-horses to bitch about. If it isn't Wilco beating 'Mats, then its bitching about how inadequate London Calling is, or how the new such and such isn't as good as their 70s output, or how some new buzzband sounds like garble, whatever. Jus' saying. I love all you quirky Obner folks.

One of the (probably valid) criticisms of Obner's taste is that it's becoming "classic rock" central with very little music recorded in the last decade given the respect to move forward in a contest like this. YHF is unquestionably (along with OKC) an album that was made in recent years that can be asked successfully to measure its worth with ... um, early 70's favorites and 80's middle school sentimental favorites.

And the 'Mats have been my favorite band and PTTM is their third best album.

You guys' mock outrage is fucking hilarious.

(unless it's not mock: in that case, go outside or read a book for the love of god.)

Despite the production, it's gotta be the 'Mats. Probably Paul's overall best set of tunes (by a hair) after Tim. It's the production that knocks it to 2nd or maybe 3rd on my list of their best albums.

The Wilco is still pretty great though.

Would that make me like Wilco more?

Despite my vote here, I'm with Harry in the idea of the "classic rock" leanings not giving many post 1990 albums any chance here at all. No disrespect to Bob, Neil, Beatles, and Stones, but there is just so much more out there that is also deserving.

The classics are classics because they're, you know, classic.

I disagree strongly with obner's taste as being classic rock central. I'm always surprised by how many obners have never heard a lot of important 60's and 70's albums. I think what you are seeing is that obners tend to agree on what are the best albums from the 60's and 70's a lot more than we do on what are the best albums from the 90's and 00's.

YHF and OKC aren't very good albums IMHO. I might be the most classic rock centric person on the board but I like some albums from the 90's and 00's that I'd rank above some of the 60's and 70's heavyweights. They just aren't the ones that are showing up here.

I'm an outlier on this board so you can't really make a point about the board based on my tastes. And I could bitch and moan if I felt inclined about the Band not making it further in these comps or Al Kooper or Jesse Ed Davis not even being worth nominated because they'd get 3 votes at most and try to make a case for it being because the board is too indie centric.

Not even close for me. I like Wilco but Pleased To Meet Me is one of my faves.

I think I'm pretty much the only human who ranks the Wilco albums in this order:

1. Sky Blue Sky
2. summerteeth
3. Wilco (The Album)
4. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
5. Being There
6. A.M.
7. A Ghost is Born

Who's not an "outlier"?

I mean, I don't know. I think that's a little bit pompous, but typical of the attitude that some of you convey regularly. Maybe it sums up the problem I have with several of you. You really believe yourselves to be outside this nebulous "herd".

Now replace "herd" with "hive" and think on it for a while.

There are many "new classics" I have never heard by many bands who have put them out. The Replacements fall into that category for me.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was the first Wilco I heard and is still one of my favorites from them, so I voted Wilco.

Aside from "Can't Hardly Wait" (which, let's face it, is one of the best songs ever written by anyone in any era), Pleased To Meet Me is a pretty uneven and at times pedestrian album.

No.

"I.O.U.," "Never Mind," "Shooting Dirty Pool," and "Red, Red Wine" are all better than just about everything on YHF outside of "Jesus, Etc."

And "Alex Chilton" is better than any Wilco song ever.
