Pavement, this time.

WL/WH should have beaten S+E, but not Loaded.

as much as I want to see some newer records in here to piss off the hive, Loaded is clearly a better record.

Probably the only Pavement record that could beat the least-interesting VU record.

Loaded, Side One alone is better than Slanted & Enchanted.

See I'm the opposite: If It was WL/WH I'd have voted Pavement but not against Loaded.

But shit Slanted is only like my fourth favorite Pavement album.

Loaded. Interestly, I just played both recently and about halfway through S&E I thought "Wow, I don't know if I ever need to hear this again, or failing that, 10 years at least". I just was so powerfully indifferent to that Pavement album, I was shocked. I'm usually not the guy to say that either.

I never knew so many people liked Pavement. I always found 'em kinda boring. Liked that Cut Your Hair video though.

I recently watched an interview with Malkmus where we was talking about his love of post-Cale VU "when they actually got good". So I guess he'd probably agree with Radcliffe.

Except that Malkmus's tastes and sensibilities were probably very different when he did S+E than they are now, and frankly I find all of his solo work to be pretty useless anyway. So it's pretty telling that the Malkmus of today would say something as boneheaded as the VU "got good" after Cale left.

And, yeah, S+E doesn't sound like any period of VU, really, so much as it sounds like The Fall.

Not sure why I'm dragged into that.

Yeah, that clears that up.

In reference to you calling VU the real thing, or Pavement "ersatz VU".

And, by the way, Loaded kicks ass. Cale or not, it's got Sweet Jane, Rock 'n' Roll, Oh Sweet Nuthin', New Age. It's pretty much the best batch of songs they put out, even if the music wasn't as "experimental" as a couple other albums.

they stole whole songs from The Fall on this album, but don't sound much like them on albums after this one.

It's also got "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" and a whole lot more Doug Yule than it needs.

Not trying to say I don't really like the album or that it isn't great. It's not perfect, and it's not VU's best.

Their s/t isn't that experimental for the most part (other than "Murder Mystery"), but it's much stronger song-for-song, IMO. Also no Cale on that, either.
