Any other suggestions? Are there any BBQ places or local cuisine that we should really try to hit?

Thanks all.

Just in time for a thunderstorm or three.

I can't in good conscience send you alone to Harold's for barbecue but there are some really good places near where you are staying that you might give a shot. Try Pig N Chik on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs (an exit or two down from you on 285 or on surface streets)

So far we've been to OK Cafe, Dave Poe's BBQ, Mary Macs and we hung out in Marietta last night. We drove through the governors neighborhood checking out the houses/mansions earlier in the week. Tomorrow we've got the aquarium and maybe going to dinner at Fat Matt's. Lunch at Cafe Intermezzo potentially as well.

Outside of the traffic we've really enjoyed ourselves.

How much longer are you gonna be here?

Aquarium + Fat Matt's sounds like a good day. Dunno about lunch at Intermezzo, though. You could definitely do better than that.

If you're going to be around the Aquarium at lunch time, maybe try Thumbs Up Diner on Marietta St. (it's cash only). There are a handful of other decent places around (Six Feet Under is OK + nice view; Spoon is a decent Thai/pan-Asian place), but that's probably the best and most "Atlanta".

This could be the slogan for Atlanta in general.

there's a really excellent pizza joint over there called Slice.

Today would likely be a good day to hit up The Varsity,...

Slice is decent. Although I wasn't sure it was still here. I thought it got replaced by a La Fonda, but maybe the La Fonda is just next to it (or near it).

Man, are you really gonna recommend The Varsity? To me that's like recommending that somebody go to Underground.

For some reason I thought you weren't coming until this weekend.

I didn't get back until Tuesday really and have completely missed this thread apparently.

It's actually supposed to be a beautiful weekend by Atlanta standards. Highs only in the mid-80's and dipping into the 60's at night.

Come on Drink. Don't be so jaded.

I've eaten at FAR worse places in other cities that were considered "landmarks" when I was playing Joe Tourist. I actually think the pictures on the wall that tell the history of the place are kind of cool with Presidents, athletes, pop stars, etc.

Yeah, I guess I haven't really been in there in close to a decade.

When I was a kid, I loved going to The Varsity in Athens whenever we'd be over there with my grandparents.

I just don't like the idea of standing in line for amusement park food when I'm not even at an amusement park. The Varsity on North Ave. is ALWAYS PACKED.

How was Mary Mac's? Haven't been there since my grandfather took me in about 1986.

It was good. I think i enjoyed the food at the OK Cafe a little bit more but the atmosphere (and peach cobbler) at Mary Macs made the experience.

I'm just thrilled to hear it's still around. Seemed like the quintessential Meat & 3 joint, but a little more upscale. I think it's a pretty old place, too. I love it when shit survives that long.

I bring all first dates there if they are unfamiliar with the place, it looks upscale, but you get pretty nice sized portions without a lot of $$$

DHR...did you get a backrub?

there's this older woman who comes around and gives backrubs...I was on a date one time and all of a sudden there's some old woman touching me, when I realized that she wasn't crazy and that this was her job I was able to relax.

Ahh, that's interesting. No back for me

Yesterday we hit the North Georgia Outlet Malls, went to Dahlonega and then to Amicalola Falls.

Today were hitting the Swan House i guess. Not sure about food today.

Nice man. You guys are doing more in this state than I've done in 2 years. What did you think of the Aquarium?

It's real pretty today. You should go to the Six Feet Under on 11th and Howell Mill and sit on the upstairs deck. Reasonably priced Fish House type place with decent beers on tap.

Hopefully we can arrange a meet up for some beers this week.

Confirm this except I usually go twice during the year.

They were pretty sweet but after 5 hours (more like 2) I was done.

Today was pretty cool. We went to the fancy-ass Phipps Mall then went to the Swan House (did the tour) and Atlanta History Center which had decent Civil War, 96 Olympics and Bobby Jones exhibits. After that we went to KC Pit BBQ for dinner in Sandy Springs and it was fantastic. They had decent little blues band playing and a packed house with people singing and dancing (on a sunday evening). The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. At the end of dinner this group who was celebrating a birthday party for their 18 year old daughter took over the front of the stage and started singing some church song (led by a 12 year old). It was pretty amazing. Cool place and it's close to our hotel.

I'm up for meeting. Whatever works best for you guys. Are cabs reasonable around Atlanta?
