maybe some, but it won't make squat for the site so I wouldn't bet on it being much of a player for long.

Long tail setups have some potential for producers/artists but very little for outlets/suppliers.

This runs counter to what the editor of Wired wrote in his recent book about the prosperity of the long tail, but I've read some pretty good debunks of most of what he writes.

similarly, i've wondered how much profitability a place like tunecore generates vs. how much work is actually involved. from my own use, i see that they make money up front on the setup/yearly album fee. plus a la carte add ons like trending reports, etc. but they don't take any royalties at all.

i guess at this point everybody's kind of shooting around in the dark to find the new model

pretty much.

CD Baby makes money because they're just a outlet/clearinghouse and don't really delve into the social/discovery side of things, which gets crazy expensive in terms of programming, upkeep and bandwidth.

I dunno much about tunecore so I can't weigh in on that.

Barely related; Fu and I spent some time trying to figure out what the point is of www.figment.cc and we pretty much came up empty. If anyone else can enlighten, please do.
