Braves retired the #31 jersey of Greg "Mad Dog" Maddux today.

Show respect for one of the top 10 greatest pitchers to ever take the hill.

First ballot Hall of Famer.

No doubt about it. Don't know how someone could NOT vote for him first ballot but some douche inevitably will.

Has there ever been a unanimous vote for someone?

I don't think so. Maybe in the very beginning.

Nope, nobody and the highest is a relatively recent player (Tom Seaver):

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hof/hofmem4.shtml

Nolan Ryan being second is ridiculous. I mean he's definitely a hall of famer, but he's not in the upper-echelon and I don't know why so many think he is.

(note it's a bit outdated, doesn't have Gossage from 2008 or Rickey and Ricey from 2009)

Playing baseball in a football stadium in a nutshell:

Last night in the A's Angels game in Oakland Rajai Davis scores from first on a botched pick off, fewer than 20k see it in person.

I think all the stadia in California, save the new ones in SF & SD, feature mammoth foul areas. & the most awesome no-hitter in history -- AJ Burnett v. Padres, in May '01 -- thanks us for that. (Seventh inning, Eric Owens races past the pen in right to glove a foul. It wasn't a fair knock, obviously, but prolly saved the gem. Burnett was all over that nite (7 bb, 3 hbp, 3 sb allowed) & due to give it up.)

It's very unfortunate that your lifetime lasted only seven years. My condolences.

He's just priming the pump for the argument for Schilling's unanimous induction. Three rings, including two for which he was prime mover (though Big Unit would disagree, as would I), & a general rep for "clutch".

& unlike the previous Mr Clutch, Reggie, Schilling doesn't have any blemish like 2500 career strikeouts to his name.

Nail, meet head.

I also wouldn't be surprised to find out he did 'roids. The only one from those hearings I don't think did 'em/other performance aids is the Big Hurt. (Who, alack, for you, went to Auburn.) But Schill has about as much affability as Rafa Palmeiro, who also claimed not to use.

... Uh, Bad Idea Jeans?

Also: from mentioning the Big Hurt, I remembered something about only five of the past 15 years entrants to the "500 Homer Club" are unlinked to PED. Frank Thomas, Ji... Jim Thome, Carlos Delgado, Ken Griffey, Jr., &... Who's the last?

Being part of the gov't case against BALCO, I would think, should disqualify him.

Remember the name Tommy Hanson. A young, 4 pitch phenom who I predict will be on the big club by the All Star break. He was the deal breaker in the Peavey deal. The Braves wouldn't give him up.

He struck out 11 batters last night. Most ever by a Braves rookie. He's now 5-0 in 6 starts since being called up.

Gotta be an early candidate for rookie of the year. We'll see how he does as his innings count rises later in the year.

Braves have actually looked pretty good lately but the Phils are just on fire.

Peavy to White Sox for 4 minor league pitchers who seem to have some upside. I'll miss Peavy but this pretty much had to be done. Seems kinda risky for WS but whatever, their problem now.

Yeah, good call on Hanson back then. I watched his first game against the Brewers and even though he kinda got rocked I could tell he had what it takes. He's got a great approach, total game face/all business on the mound. I tried to get him on my fantasy roster, but Andrew McCutchen was a good substitute.
