i have almost no idea who or what you guys are talking about but I think that they were just on the TV in the kitchen singing what sounded like a Foo Fighters song.

Comments like this are so funny.

I'm not calling you a liar or anything, but you're a liar. I do not understand how anyone who pays one fraction of attention to music doesn't know who these guys are. It's impossible. It's not like their a random pop act or something.

It sounds exactly like they're a random pop act to me. I know that Gar and his assorted hangers-on spooge over them, and that's about enough of a reason for me to ignore them. Where would I have heard them? New Yorker's year in review? Meet the Press's music edition? I don't read Spin. I come here and only listen to hardcore gangster-ass rap music and NPR podcasts. Are these guys in beer commercials or something?

In all seriousness, for once, are these guys really that ubiquitous? I'm 31 and have a baby and a wife, a kitchen disaster 25% complete and 3 cars, none of which are in any state of respectability. How would I know anything about Kings of Leonz? If anything, I'm sincerely surprised that everyone else knows them as being bigger than U2 like they invented finding money and wrote the Twilight books in between titty-fucking.

haha

The must still be bigger outside of America.

Because it was pretty hard to get through a day without hearing sex on fire or that MGMT electric feel song a year ago, and I never even listen to the radio.

they played a benefit show here last year where tickets were $125 and it sold out. they also played a 4,000-capacity venue at, like, $45+ and that sold out very quickly too. and they're co-headlining lollapalooza this year, too. i have no idea where these fans are coming from.

i noticed even more hype than before after "sex on fire" was aired on gossip girl - next day everyone added to their myspace profile (for those who actually use ms anymore)

KoL took a long time to grow on me but i love the hell out of them. it just kinda pisses me off to have to pay +$50 to deal w/a bunch of bros so i won't do it.

and also, interesting cover story about them on rollingstone in the last issue.

According to Pollstar, KoL are ranked 23 in worldwide reported ticket sales for the 1Q of 2009 (157,787 sold). They're sandwiched between SLIPKNOT and FLEETWOOD MAC.

I heard "Use Somebody" on the radio today, and if you took out the vocals it sounded like Coldplay or some other random crap.

Which is why they've made this jump in mainstream popularity, imo. The scuzzy Southern swagger and mystery is gone.

From their FB feed:

Kings Of Leon just received their first RIAA-certified platinum album in the United States! Only By The Night has been certified platinum for sales of 1,000,000!

Yeah, I mean I'm not a huge fan or anything but they've done it the old-school way of touring their asses of, making good records and seizing the opportunities they've gotten. They're probably flirting with the point where just about everything they release from now on could sell around 200,000 copies overall even if radio totally ignored them.

Kudos, I say. Looking forward to seeing them at ACL Fest.

Proof positive that all the world's ills trace back to Canada.

To tie this in with my David Moore thread of a couple of weeks ago, new KoL sounds like late-era Chamberlain.

I saw them last year opening for Son Volt (they traded off from night to night who was headliner) at the Fillmore. I was right at the edge of the stage and the guitarist stepped on my hand.

They are solid. I totally get how someone could think they wear the mantle of real American Rock and Roll. And live they had more energy than soporific depressive Jay Farrar. But the substance of their music... evaporates for me. The thought and heart in Son Volt's music exposed the Jack Daniel's show biz glitz of their....

Oh shit, I though Kings of Leon were Drive by Truckers.... I saw K of L open for U2... they totally suck... ha, ha, ha,,,, nurse... oh nurse, my meds please....

If you think that DBT is less substantive than Jay Farrar I have to re-evaluate every opinion I have ever held of you, my friend.

And yes - I like rock music. I don't like loser rap or whatever it is chase is into. But he's a respectable middle aged connoiseur with 3 cars now.

Oh, Jesus. Can't anyone have an opinion around here?

I still like them quite a bit and throw that record on every couple weeks. Not their fault they could catch a few atoms of the zeitgeist.

Agree 100%. Couldn't really care less about 'em, but I give 'em credit for doing it the "olden-timey" way.

Though if you're referencing Glasvegas' proclamation as "Band of the Year (of the week)" a while back, well, it's happened to far worse.

I had honestly forgotten all about them. I went and checked and both sides of the fence seemed pretty wet over it in fall of 2008.

Well, I guess we just have this silent cult of Glasvegans.

It never much grabbed me.
