Am I the only one that's not too impressed by this album? It sounds off-kilter and meandering.
The organ on the song, Better Version Of Me has a distinct, "I'm at the circus!" kind of sound that I really don't like. I'm going to give it a few more spins because I respect Ms. Apple for her excellent debut Tidal but I have a feeling its just not going to stick with me.
If you prefer Tidal to When the Pawn, then you're not going to like this as much, and that's fine. The album is a bit out there, but that's what I love about it. This would have been my album of the 2004, I was really bummed that it didn't come out. Considering how long Sony's had it, I doubt that it's a marketing ploy.
Regardless, this will be an all time classic for me, and I'll tell you why. The album has a sound, a distinctive sound. Just like Pet Sounds, Sgt. Peppers, etc...
If you think that sounds presumptous, that's cool, you're right, it is. But that's what this album is to me, just like When the Pawn, and Jellyfish's Spilt Milk, and Massive Attack's Mezzanine...
I love this album.
