my grandfather actually used the term "wetback" in front of my friend's Danish fiancee, and she looked at me in horror and asked what it meant, and I panicked. how do you explain what it means and what THAT means he meant?

Look, I'm third generation American, my back has been dry for quite some time!

Other derogatory terms for our people:

Wetters -- short for wetbacks
Beaners
Chuntaros / chuntis -- usually used by my own people
Border Buddies
Mojados -- Spanish for "wetbacks"

I would not recommend using either term, especially while in San Diego.

Someone explain how that one's offensive? Like, where the offense originates from. Knowing where the term came from (maps used to have East as the top of the page instead of North, making the area east of Europe "the orient" because you oriented your map that way), it doesn't make any sense. I'm really curious.

My grandfather used to use that for brazil nuts, yeah. Not often. I guess sometimes the ol' odometer upstairs just slipped back to 1925.
