Another good reason to get an automatic. It's not pretty when you're too hammered to drive and you let someone else drive your manual and they spend the whole trip home grinding the shit out of your gears because they can barely drive a stick.

Americans prefer the 'easy' way of driving, it appears.

I'll admit that when driving in traffic, it does get a bit tiring. And, it always makes me feel less-than-confident when driving on San Francisco's many hills (I don't know how ya do it, Shmoo!). But, I much prefer driving a manual vs an automatic.

Btw, Joe, road trips are easy peasy. Once you're on the open road, there's no need for shifting.

Just curious...why wouldn't someone want the "easy" way of driving? I mean there are plenty of things you have to do the hard way in life, plenty of them are worth is. But, getting from point a to point b? I'm not exactly coming up with anything rational for why you'd not want to easiest way possible.

For me, driving a manual car is easy.

I'm not saying it is difficult. Just wondering why the somewhat pejorative use of ...Americans must like the easy way of driving....after admitting it can be tiring to drive a manual in traffic. Not saying there is anything wrong with driving a manual if you prefer it for whatever reason. Just curious what on earth could be wrong with wanting driving to be easy...unless I misunderstood and it was not used with the negative connotation it sounded like to me.

Or never mind, not worth an argument or anything...just sounded odd to me.

I don't really care either way, Dale. I'm just goofing on the whole idea of how manually selecting the gear on an engine relates to the concept of masculinity. I mean, I could understand if you were talking about carnivorism vs. vegetarianism or hunting & killing vs. pacifism but we're basically talking appliances here. It's like arguing over top loading toasters vs. toaster ovens.

It was a general statement, nobody.

I'll tell ya, if I wasn't using a stick shift while stuck in traffic on my 30 mile - 1.5+ hour commute to work, I'd probably fall asleep. Plus, my calf muscles get a nice lil' workout. :)

That commute sounds like hell. At least it gives you time to pour about a gallon of coffee down on your way to work.

It's hard to eat eat snack foods and drive a stick in the city.

That being said, I have a manual tranny.

Ah yes...because there's nothing more manly than wrapping your right hand around a rod (not your own!) for large portions of a car trip.

Driving is for asexuals. I ride the bus.

Yeah, I don't drive regularly or own a vehicle besides a bike. I can drive a manual tractor and a fork lift, although automatic forklifts are much cooler to drive.

All my cars have been manual transmission. I prefer it for a number of reasons, but the main reason is with a stick you actually have to THINK about driving while you drive. Traffic would move a lot smoother with a lot less accidents if even 3/4 of the brain-dead dumbfucks on the road would just PAY ATTENTION to the fact that they're driving a car. I know a stick will cut into your texting time, but, for one trip at a time, why not just try thinking about something outside of your precious self?

I also only buy cars that don't have power windows or any other useless options that won't work in a couple years of ownership.

Manual transmission, no options, and a sweet stereo.

Edit: waiting for the 8 track "joke"

i can't believe i am about to say this but i agree with radcliffe 100%. i negatively judge anyone who choses to 'drive' an automatic.

Rads, what you're trying to say is...dumb people drive automatics.

I agree.
