I'm not going to get into the they weren't banned substances back then debate. If McGwire ends up getting an asterisks or kept out of the Hall of Fame for it, then Papi and company can face some ridicule and punishment now.
He could have kept his mouth shut and not commented on it in the first place, but knowing you failed a test and then making a righteous statement like that seems fucking moronic and places you in total douchebag status.

Ortiz joins Palmeiro & Clemens on that trip. Granted, he didn't lie to Congress while doing it, but... Same level.

At least Bonds had the sense to say "I never knowingly did steroids".

Aprendan mentir, cabrones!

I understand that... But like with Griffey, if that bombshell were remaining unexploded, it would be highly illogical. Someone would have scored that scoop. Some scuzzy trainer with dope ties would have a book out about The Kid or Larry Wayne being dirty.

I mean, Larry Wayne's laundry about the Hooters girl -- now his wife, but his mistress during his first marriage -- already came out. Why no juicing stories?

The same reason we didn't know about Ortiz until today?

Bonds's & Clemens's road-beef emerged concurrent to, or in the aftermath of, their PED connections being known. Bonds's even posed for Playboy. (Rocket's beef was too methed-out to merit anything better than High Society... So as not to jeopardize her country singing career, Mindy Mc Cready begged off.)

I contend, if other dirt was under Larry Wayne's rug, it would have come out same as the Hooters girl did.

Just look at Elijah Dukes. In the divorce proceedings following "you dead, dawg", his baby-mother (to two (?) of his five kids (high-five, bro! (I mean that))) accused him of being a compulsive weed-head & roider. Now, the roiding was never proved -- & for Dukes's entire time in the minors, there was testing -- but it still got out there. Not with Larry's marital foibles, though, did anything similar rear its head.

Monty, while I would love to think Chip was innocent, the Hooters chick thing happened in like 1996. Before TEH ROIGS was on anyone's radar, really ((I mean that) (High Five)_)

Yes, & no. Canseco -- per thrillhouse -- was being taunted with "roider, roider" as early as '88, '89, & it's known that Caminiti was using in the same year as Chipper's dalliances. So, I think usage from that year would be out, on Larry Wayne or anyone else. & if later -- look at Bonds, he started using in late '99, into '00, if memory of the accusation serves, AFTER the great Irish-Dominican home-run chase, & it's well out there. I think Chipper, Griffey, & even Thome & Carlos Delgado (the latter two of whom I am still suspicious, on the PED front) would be exposed by now, then.

Don't forget why Bonds started juicing when he did: Sosa and McGwire were parading around like the finalists in a Mr. Universe pageant, getting all kinds of love before that.

And yes, people have been doing 'roids in baseball probably since the mid to late 80's.

Exactly. Bonds was on pace, not necessarily to break Aaron's mark, but at least to place around his Godfather, & without benefit of PED, but all people could see him for was an asshole. Meanwhile, Mc Gwire was juicing for, prolly, ten years, & Sosa for three or five, & they were being touted as Roman idols.

aaron rodgers you crack me up man. there are still 100 names on the list from 2003 that we don't know so i am not so sure about your theory that chipper is clean because we haven't heard about it yet. and that's not even taking into consideration that not being on the list doesn't mean anything anyway.

and let's not forget the first red sox player to have a public steroid issue, manny alexander, should be all the proof you need that steroids are everywhere in that league and the hr totals don't tell you the whole story.

Oh, we knew that after Randy Velarde popped up in the BALCO investigation. Bobby Estalella didn't make steroids look any better, either.
