This is the first part (the group stage) in Obner's efforts to pick the best album released in the 2000s. In the group stage, there will be 64 groups of 5 albums. The top vote-getter in each group will advance to the 64-album tournament.

Please vote for the album that you feel deserves to be in the tournament. The deadline for this group is Monday, August 3 at 1:00PM Eastern Time.

Hold Steady, in what will almost certainly be my album of the decade. I do also like Cold Roses and to a lesser extent, All Hands on the Bad One.

Hmm, gonna vote Crooked Fingers, but the Hold Steady and S-K are both really good too. Though I do still like Almost Killed Me the most from HS.

Crooked Fingers.
I like M83, but I couldn't even say it was the best album for that year now.

I listen to 4 out of these 5 albums quite frequently (not so much M83)...

...but, in a wash, it's Cold Roses.

Ryan Adams. That album was a slow grower for me, but I got there.

I voted Ryan Adams becuase I figured it didn't have a chance to win........that may have been a miscalculation on my part.

Fucking brutal.

I like all of these except M83 (which I haven't heard yet)

Pretty much a toss up though with Boys and Girls and Cold Roses.

In the end, I went with Ryan Adams. Easily my favorite of his these days. It's his "Exile...". Sprawling and all over the place.

No, Fail. Cold Roses is at best OK...BAGIA is a fucking masterpiece of drunken poetry.

Ryan Adams? The Cardinals? Please he's a drunken buffoon mascarading as a poet.

Give me The Hold Steady. They have the courage to be drunken buffoons -- which makes them poetic!

The power chords of "Stuck Between Stations" almost turned the tide but, since I'm in a melancholy mood and am sobering up from the Margs had at dinner the sweet strands of "Sweet Illusions", "If I Am A Stranger", "Dance All Night', and "Blossom" are what's cuttin the mustard tonight.

When I hear this I get so fucking happy because I've got the whole album to go still, kind of like when I hear "...as far back as I remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."
