I suppose it's not a massive problem but it's beginning to piss me off alittle.

What's happening is when I move my cursor to click on a link or a folder or whatever the cursor shoots off of it's own accord to the Microsoft Window 'Start' button. It doesn't happen everytime but it is not an uncommon event.

Am I just going to have to live with this or is there something I can do to stop it via Windows or some such?

Don't take this the wrong way, but when's the last time you cleaned your ball?

If you lift an infrared mouse, sometimes it thinks it's still flat and is moving quickly, causing the pointer to jump.

It's all in the wrist.

Darrin - along the lines of what Timmy said, make sure you're using the mouse on a solid-colored surface. Sometimes even wood grain will confuse them. Try the back of a book without the dustcover and see if the problem still happens.

Have you checkd your Mouse settings under Control Panel? In my case(I have a Logitech Mouse) I have an option under the <Motion> tab for "Smart Move". This will cause the cursor to "jump to the highlighted button of a new dialog box" - seems odd that it would go to the Start menu but this is something to check.

I've always heard those wireless mice eat batteries at a crazy-fast rate...is it true?

Dear Mr. Gere,

I'm having trouble with my mouse, and given your vast experience with small rodents, I thought maybe you could help.

Is it wireless? This happened to me the only time I ever used a wireless mouse. I assumed it was due to the mouse being a piece of crap.

I could be wrong, but I think my brother "tested" his cordless mouse by seeing how long it could go on a full charge and it lasted three days.

Ours takes two AA's. Each set lasts about two months.

That's most likely the problem. I've had the same issue here at work, too, because my keyboard/mouse tray has a semi-rough surface to it, and the laser can't track properly. So I frequently find that my arrow has disappeared, only to find it on the other side of the screen. Real annoying.
