Reds got Scott Rolen from Toronto for Edwin Encarnacion, reliever Josh Roenicke and Minor League right-handed pitcher Zach Stewart.

and Jerry Hairston Jr. to the Yankees for Minor League catcher Chase Weems.

These are the best 2 trades the Reds have made in a long time.

What do the Reds need with Scott Rolen?

Rolen is trying to play for every NL team that wears a red hat.

Unless Toronto is sending $10-$15 Mil for Rolen's contract i don't see how this is remotely good for the Reds. Hey, check out our almost washed up new 3b we got for a few decent young guys with much more team friendly contracts. Yeah us.

We haven't had a good 3rd baseman since Chris Sabo. Now all we need is a SS...a couple outfielders...2 starting pitchers...

Washed up? The dude is hitting .320
The Reds have young guys out the ass, but not any have proven worthy.

.320 with a .347 BABIP...he'll come down to earth over the next month or so. Maybe he will maintain it but he's not improving....he's clearly declining...and he's owed $20 mil over the next year and 2 months. He's not going to push them into the playoffs and he costs more money. It's just not smart. Plus Dusty is not very good. Tavaras and Gonzalez should never be near the top of the order....ever.

I'm not saying Rolen's washed up, I'm saying he's 34 and the Reds are nowhere near contention.

Cliff Lee pitched good as shat last night. A great 1st game, if Cole can be consistent, I love our top 2 going into the playoffs.

I couldn't agree more. Corey Patterson made it pretty obvious that Dusty doesn't know his ass from a hole in the wall. I would go a step further and say Tavaras and Gonzalez shouldn't even be on a MLB roster.

I'm not worried about how much Rolen makes as long as he gets hits and doesn't make errors.

I don't even care about contention any more. After being a Reds fan and Bengals fan my entire life, I just want some hope that if I go to a game it might be a good one to watch. This year with the Reds has been one of the most disappointing ever. It seems like every nobody or washed up pitcher that comes into town has a 2 hit shutout performance for 7 innings against us. The Reds offense is anemic, pathetic, and lazy. If we don't get a stellar performance from the starter the Reds have no chance. If we do score some 5 or 6 runs our 3rd basement throws a routine double play ball into right field or tosses a throw to first base into the stands letting 4 unearned runs in. The Reds can be close to good, but they lack fundamentals and seem to prefer an occasional hero who is more often the goat....SHIT.....Where's the Tylenol. [/Clark Griswold rant]

you should care about his salary. that's less money for international signings, less for draft pick signings (which leads to passsing on Boras guys because of signability), less money to sign guys like Bruce and Votto to extensions.

I saw this with the Mariners the last few years until we hired Jay-Z (Jack Zduriencik) as our GM who is a little more forward thinking and our teams future is really bright once again. It's never a good idea to take on bloated salaries of declining aging players unless you think they'll push you over the top to make a run at the playoffs.

Whoa. I came in here to post about the Yanks/Sox series and saw this. Openly don't even remember that post. I would say that I was still stinging from Thursday's night heartbreaker against the Dodgers but looks like the post was from Saturday night (or Sunday morning) and we'd already won 2 in a row.

Not even sure where that was coming from now.

But, back to recent events, I expected more from the Yankees fans on here today.

Granted, I haven't been following too closely but I didn't realize the Yankees were so far out in front now. WTF has happened to the Red Sox?

All this Vick/Philly talk reminded me.

Big series in the NL East this weekend.

It's not "lol mets" until we escape New York having taken 3 of 4. If we lose tomorrow it will not have been a satisfying series at all. Given the current state of the mets, splitting a four game series will feel underwhleming, especially considering the way the Phillies won today... scoring 6 runs in the top of the first, only to avoid losing by way of a lucky triple play.

It would not surprise me at all if Lee tosses a no-hitter tomorrow.

if the phillies spot you three errors in the 9th, and all you need is one line drive to end the game . . . no matter what a "lol mets" feels apt to me.

And the hits just keep coming for Francouer.

But, yes, lol Mets. Easily the biggest disaster in baseball this year.

The Braves are driving me insane. They're doing just enough to keep me involved with them but not enough to make a big move on the wild card. At least not yet.

If they get swept in any series the rest of the way, they're done.

It felt really weird to watch John Smoltz pitch for the Cards yesterday, but he's still a damn fine pitcher for the NL.
