From what I've read the past couple of days it's certainly transitioning. Seems to be taking cues from Qatar and UAE. There are 3 (at least that I found) hotels now that actually serve alcohol and refined sugar, which is kind of sad to me (though I'm sure this will be a plus if I end up going there). But for the most part, does seem to still be very traditional.

Why is it sad? If it's anything like Iran or Afghanistan, things were probably much less strict there 50 years ago.

I initially thought I might be able to bargain for Nigeria (again the language thing, figured it may be easier to transition from Portugese and Spanish to French), but I wouldn't be able to take my daughter there as there is no approved daycare or school facilities in the immediate area. Also, some concern about the general safety of my daughter there. Which to me seems ridiculous. If Colombia were an option I could take my daughter there and somehow my employer feels there would be less of a targeted risk there than in Nigeria. Not sure how they come to these conclusions.

I would imagine there are some pretty safe urban areas in Colombia, just based on what the few Colombians I've known have told me. Nigeria - who knows. I could imagine the whole place being pretty sketchy.

Tony Bourdain in Colombia was pretty damn interesting.

I guess I find it a bit sad just because I really disliked some of the things I saw in Doha a few years ago. To drive downtown and see Chili's and KFC, I just didn't like it for some reason. I guess it should make me happy, because there and in UAE now there seems to be a great blend of the traditional and western, which I guess is kind of a goal elsewhere, but it still bothered me a bit.

And yeah. The time I've spent in Colombia there were only a few times/places that worried me a bit. But overall Bogota, Cali, even parts of Medellin were great.

Well, yeah, I guess that does suck. Seeing a Chili's and a KFC anywhere kinda sucks.

Got official word this morning, I am finally (after waiting almost a year now) moving into a field site position. Leaving mid-September for Kabul, will come back after about a year and relocate to the DC area. Means a year away from my kid, but she'll enjoy grandma's I suppose.

Fucking Kabul.

I work for an entity within the alphabet soup three letter US Agency system. Post 9/11 when the US intel system realized no one was talking to each other positions were established within NSA, CIA, and most importantly the DOD/DIA and State Dept with the sole purpose of serving as an intermediary between agencies. At one point it was thought this would only serve to facilitate cross talk within the system, however, we have now moved into a position where we are sharing intel with more countries, particularly non-second party countries, than ever before. The idea of empowering the countries to act based on our information.

That being said, we obviously aren't going to release everything, and there is massive amounts of policy for each country on what to share, who to share with, systems to use, rules for HUMINT vs. imagery for example, and within that there are of course the old positions of debriefers and handlers and LNOs etc. So you have this pinwheel for lack of a better word with each agency having it's own set of rules on what it shares, how they operate in country and out of country, and in the center of that you have the country ambassador who in all honesty doesn't understand all the ins and outs of the nonsense and who really doesn't care to, or need to, so you have people like me, who control the system and ensure that information flows as it should, fight the agencies on behalf of the host country and ambassador to get them to share their information IAW prescribed doctrine, and get the neccesary information to the ambassador and handlers for further tasking and results.

Probably way more than you cared to know, but I love my job, and could ramble on about it all day long.

That being said, I am excited about Kabul (though after getting out of the military I never thought I would be back in the AOR). Bottom line is like with any other job you have to pay your dues. I am still young for the system and have been down here in Tucson for a couple of years working a crap position (especially post-Ingrid and US hostage rescue), and though I love the South America AOR, those jobs in country are choice and I am not in a position to get moved to Brazil right now, I just don't have that kind of pull. So, I still get a field site job, in a high-vis country, and will hopefully be able to come back spend time in DC and then start pushing for Turkey or Azerbaijan or somewhere I really want to go.

Language is still an issue for me though. I've spent the past year working almost exclusively on Pashtu and still only tested at 2+, 2+, which was the minimum for this post. So, I need to spend a lot of time there (while hoping to retain proficiency in Spanich and Portugese) as well as pick up Erdu and Hindi over the next year, or else my options will still be pretty limited.

Damn, I'm going to stop now as you don't care to know that much. Sorry.

Jesus. So you're going to be in the desert listening to William Fowler Collins at the front of the new threat?

WOW.

Blaring it as loud as I can  . Similar story, last time I was in country for a meeting down in Colombia we had a couple of Senators come through and had no idea they would be walking into the cell, so there's just two of us in the office and I'm blasting Khanate when they come walking in. As they walked off overheard one of them make the comment, "That sure wasn't very pleasant, was it?" I turned it up more, and mark that as a career highlight to this day.

I found out on Friday that I got promoted in my office. I jump up a pay grade and end up getting an 11.5% pay increase. I also found out the gov owes me $800 from purchasing my condo 2 years ago so I'll be getting that next week......then got a letter in the mail yesterday that said my mortgage was dropping $70 a month because I pay too much in my escrow ....it also came with a $500 check.

Crazy couple of days.

I think I was surly and full of disrespect for my supervisor at the company picnic this weekend. He's a total tool but my my former boss, who is now a senior manger, seemed to find every drunken derogatory comment I made hilarious.

Monday morning should be fun, anyway.
