Just bought tickets to see Kronos on Sep 12th and Sep 14th. The 12th I'm not too excited about with the exception of hearing them do the arrangements of Sigur Ros. The 14th though is with Wu Man, and they are doing Steve Reich's Triple Quartet and Terry Riley's The Cusp of Magic, so am ridiculously excited about that.

Saw Malkmus and the Jicks at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur last night. Great spot for music; it is like 150 people in a small open area, sorta like a backyard, right on highway 1 with the sound of seals barking several hundred feet down. Malkmus was his own roadie. He looked depressed and annoyed. He said "start high, finish low..." which I took to mean he is astonished that he is playing in a backyard. He played nothing before the second solo album. Weiss, the drummer from Sleater-Kinney, is a great addition to the band. Malkmus looked like a bipolar tenure-track professor...over 40, worried and cynical about his future.

Caught My Bloody Valentine at The National here in Richmond on Thursday. Pretty amazing experience and exactly as expected - loud as all hell and backed by cool visuals (lights, video, etc.). Surprised The National (cool old opera house) is still standing after the 15 minute holocaust of You Made Me Realize.

Video of "Only Shallow" from the show…

Dead Meadow and Sleepy Sun at Big Sur. Dead Meadow were smart, heavy, dark ... until they got too drunk. Sleepy Sun were brilliant... but every song has the same loud/soft dynamics and so, ironically, sound the same. Very young.. if this band stays together it could be very good. And WarPaint was the most interesting band on the bill. Flea-endorsed. There at the back of the crowd are my partner and me:
