I listen to that Wrens album more than any other album released in the past ten years.

I've seen them 9 times since 2003, and even though the album is great, I think they are even better live.

This album is one of the very few I'm really willing to fight for, which will probably sway a lot of people the other way

The Wrens were my first foray into Board OverHype. Saw everyone here splooging their skinnyjeans over that album, so I got it and threw it into the cd player, and my face melted from "eager anticipation" to "hey that's, that's not so bad I guess" to "wait this is terrible."

yup. except i don't necessarily think it's terrible. i am still looking to dump my handmade limited ed. copy though.

i still blame DS Bruce Robertson for saying they sounded like the stone roses.

Maybe I should check out that Songs:Ohia rekkid.

I only own "Magnolia Electric Co." and really liked the song "Farewell Transmission" but after that I thought it was kind of disappointing.

They have all the right references that say I should really love 'em, (Neil, Lou Reed, etc), but I thought Molina voice never carried off the weight needed to pull off some of his lyrics and quite simply, the songs just weren't there.

Didn't help that I was a little disappointed by them live as well. Saw on a weird triple bill with Songs:Ohia, Destroyer, and Mates of State.

Wrens - i listened to it quite a few times last year when some good friends were going through a divorce. Still quite enjoyable. (and i haven't listened to any of those other albums....ever....except for singles here and there)

One of the things that makes Didn't It Rain his best record is that it doesn't rely solely on Molina's voice to carry the songs. The supporting cast (Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops) on it is huge, even thought their contributions are often understated throughout. It's a pretty sad-sack record, but it's the best overall sound he's ever pulled off coupled with his best set of songs.

And 2 of the 3 times I saw him live weren't very good. The one really good show I saw was a weird opening spot for Arab Strap where Molina was just accompanied by one multi-instrumentalist guy. He was in really good spirits, and the whole thing sounded great. He even let some kid from the audience come up and play drums for one song. The kid sucked, but it made the whole set even better.
