I am caught up in the beginning of the season hype, but I think we will shock the fuck out of some people.

Not arguing with you on this, but Tech did beat you last year between the hedges.

Which I called from 10,000 miles away. The wind was at their backs... this year they come back to earth.

Last year was one of those "they have to beat you some time and this is that some time" games.

That's what I thought about the 2005 Nebraska-Kansas game, but then they hung 70 on the Huskers in 2007. The good news is that you have Richt, who coaches a rather consistent game/style. He's like Tom Osborne in the 80's. You might not have a chance in hell to win it all, but you'll never win fewer than 9 games.

I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid on them.

They have a unique offense and a good coach but that D is average at best. They will also have to deal with what they haven't had to deal with in years: expectations

What happens if they're knocked off their horse and they're 2-2 when the calendar turns to October? Will it mess with them mentally? I predict that will happen although I don't know which of these will get them in the first month; UNC, Miami, or Clemson.

Penn State is #12, with this schedule they'll probably make a BCS Bowl and get completely annihilated once again.

College Football News has done their entire preseason poll.

There's one very important distinction in the CFN preseason rankings: these are based on how good the teams are going into the season and NOT how they're going to finish. Some teams have easier schedules than others, some get tougher road games and some will need a little bit of time to jell meaning they might be better than their final record might indicate. Going into the year, these are how good the teams appear to be from No. 1 through 120.

1. Florida
2. USC
3. Oklahoma
4. Texas
5. Georgia
6. Ohio State
7. LSU
8. Oklahoma State
9. Penn State
10. California
11. Alabama
12. Ole Miss
13. Iowa
14. Virginia Tech
15. Oregon
16. Florida State
17. Notre Dame
18. West Virginia
19. Illinois
20. Missouri
21. Georgia Tech
22. Miami
23. Pitt
24. Clemson
25. South Florida

Obner schools
26. Michigan State
28. Oregon State
30. Kansas
31. North Carolina
34. Wisconsin
36. NC State
38. Nebraska
44. Cincinnati
45. Rutgers
48. Boston College
50. Arkansas
51. Northwestern
52. Maryland
56. UCLA
59. Vanderbilt

I'm ok with WVU being around 18.

Expect them to convert last year's loses v. Colorado, E.Carolina, and Cincy into wins. Week 3 they will be going into Auburn, so all I can hope for is no injuries, 'cause its gonna be ugly.

About a month old article from Bleacher Report but still interesting. CFB's best games of opening weekend:

Oregon @ Boise State

Quote:
Thursday September 3

Last year Boise went to Eugene and beat the wounded Ducks, whose high-powered offense struggled at quarterback. The Broncos went on to an undefeated regular season, only to fall to TCU and the nation’s number one defense in the non-BCS Poinsettia Bowl—one of the best bowl games of last year.

Oregon will be looking for revenge and comes loaded. Boise must win for a chance to return to BCS glory, as the rest of their schedule is nothing to celebrate.

A 5-star start to the season.

Louisiana Tech @ Auburn

Quote:
Louisiana Tech, under 3rd year coach Derek Dooley, with its high powered running attack and solid defense is always ready to take on its powerful neighbors in the SEC. Last year, Tech beat Mississippi State and now they have a chance to take it to rebuilding Auburn.

Gene Chizik left a disaster behind at Iowa State. Couldn't Auburn bring in a winning coach?

This could be a long start to a bad season for Auburn. Look for a potential upset here.

Nevada @ Notre Dame

Quote:
Is Norte Dame BCS bound, or just going to have another mediocre season?

While Nevada will not be the hardest team on the ND schedule, Nevada brings its high powered running attack in what is sure to be an interesting game.

Last year, ND struggled with San Diego St., one of the worst teams in the FBS. Will a loss to the Wolfpack signal the end of Charlie Weis’ tenure at ND?

Georgia @ Oklahoma State

Quote:
Unlike most of its SEC brethren (especially Florida), Georgia has tried to upgrade its OOC slate with quality games out of the region.

While last year’s trip to Arizona State was hurt by the Sun Devils’ unexpected defeat at the hands of MWC also-ran UNLV the week before, this year’s trip to Stillwater is not just one of the best games of the week, but one of the OOC games of the year. Thank you Georgia!!!

Mark Richt’s squad faces Mike Gundy’s super-powered offense in what is sure to be an entertaining game. A Georgia win here will establish them as a true challenge to Florida.

Gundy may be a man, but his teams do not know the meaning of the word "defense".

Get ready to have a goooooood time!

BYU vs Oklahoma @ Arlington

[quote]Get ready to hold onto your hats and look for lots of touchdowns, as Jerry World opens with of the top offenses in college football. Jerry Jones is planning on many more college games in his stadium, with high profile games throughout the season.

Last year, OU benefitted from the BCS standings to leap over rival Texas into the Big 12 title game and into the BCS championship game.

While OU continued its BCS failure, it returns most of its defense (ranked 99th last year) and its backfield, including Heisman winner Sam Bradford and a pair of powerful RBs.

A brand-new O-line may damper the offense, leaving OU vulnerable and making Bradford question coming back for another season.

BYU failed on its “Quest for Perfectionâ€

FUCK YEAH!

My sister just bought our family tickets to the 300th Sellout game for Nebraska. They are playing Lousiana-Lafayette and are wearing throwback jerseys. Supposedly it is also Homecoming weekend, so it should be utter pandemonium.

Yep, and the starting DE on the 2029 National Championship team will get to witness it!

Coaches Poll is out.

It's nice to see Nebraska at #22. I'm a little surprised to see UNC there and thought BYU and Oregon State might be a bit higher. I wonder if Virginia Tech is that high due to the relative weakness of the ACC, I guess will find out when they play Bama.

Awesome. UGA plays 8 teams from that whole list (Top 25 and "others receiving votes")

They're going to be pretty good this year I think. They had a sophmore QB last year and he was hurt half the season and they still went 8-4 and lost a heartbreaker in their bowl game to WVU who still had Pat White.

They also got their first top 10 recruiting class last year in years.

I think that vote just shows how much respect coaches have for Butch Davis. At least at the collegiate level. That program is on the upswing for sure.

I don't know what their roster is like but if they didn't lose many players from last years team, I'd say they have an outside chance at winning their division.

They have one of the easiest schedules in America and only lost once last year. I don't think they lost too many players, especially on Offense from last year. I've never been a Nittany Lion Fan, but I can see why they'd be considered top ten. They are like Hawaii a few years back or BYU in the early 80's.

I'm envious of your year in and out knowledge retention of college football. I simply don't retain information from year to year. For instance, during lunch yesterday I was watching UGA/FL 2004 (31-24 win) and while watching I couldn't for the life of me remember if we won or not. It's more in-the-moment experience for me I guess. I was the same way when I played. I have friends from HS I played with that remember scores from games we played 12 years ago.

Uga VII is getting uglier. Losin' that babgy fakk.

Nebraska plays two teams in the top ten and four in the also receiving votes. Kansas and Texas Tech will probably reach Top 25 status at some point this season.

To be fair, KK's dad went to Davidson undergrad and then UNC Law school so he's a huge Tarheel (and UGA fan FWIW). So I've spent a good amount of time over cocktails talking UNC and UGA sports. Not to mention I was in Charlotte when the UNC/WVU bowl game was going on and we watched it with him.

I can remember where I was and most of the outcomes for every Auburn and UF game since I enrolled. Some of the others, not so much...

it's so weird to see both Oregon schools ranked every year now, after, for most of my life, seeing them stink every year.
