Quote:

With their 2007 self-titled debut, the L.A. space-punks HEALTH raised plenty of eyebrows, but the record didn't quite take them past the promising-young-band stage. But when they released their shockingly great noise-dance single "Die Slow" last month, the band hinted that they might be ready to enter some rarefied new stage, one where their most clangorous instincts meshed perfectly with their most ecstatic.

"Die Slow" sounds like a party where Lightning Bolt's playing at one end of the room and Giorgio Moroder is studiously banging out psych-disco masterpieces at the other, but everyone is somehow miraculously getting along. It's the sound of a band getting ready to make their great leap forward.

We'll find out on September 8 whether HEALTH are ready to make that leap. That's when Lovepump United will release Get Color, the band's second album. Check above for the cover and below for the tracklist. If the rest of the LP is up to the standard of "Die Slow", we're all in for a treat. And if it's not, we'll at least get a new song called "Eat Flesh", which should count for something.

Get Color:

01 In Heat
02 Die Slow
03 Nice Girls
04 Death+
05 Before Tiger
06 Severin
07 Eat Flesh
08 We Are Water
09 In Violet

One of, if not the best, live bands out there right now. Looking forward to hearing this. Thanks.

that description is worrisome, but let's see what they got.

Wow, maybe I've been lucky both times I've seen them as they have been incredible. One of the few bands I've seen this year who 1) appear to go absolutely all out with each show, just sheer exhaustion at the end of their set, and 2) add just enough change to the songs from their records where it isn't like listening to the record, but doesn't become completely unrecognizable.

I hate to hear they didn't deliver when you saw them, makes me a bit disappointed.

I wasn't much of a fan of the last album, but I enjoy this. It's like a Dance version of These Are Powers with lovely female shoegaze vocals.

Delivered even when I saw them in the Austin Convention Center, in a padded conference room, while eating an $8 container of salad.

Yeah, it's not the kind of thing you'd like.

I really enjoyed their last album, and it kinda gave me the feeling that this could be the one band from their respective scene with the most promise.

Looking forward to this one and have heard good things about it, but I think I'll wait and get a physical copy.

I think you'll like this a good bit Drink. Today's the first day I've been able to turn it up quite loud and give it a good listen, and it's definitely quality. Not sure I like it as much immeidately as I did the last one, they seem to have dialed it in a bit on this, but there are still some great bursts of noise on here, just not as many as they have had in the past.

The audio in that clip (along with some horrible filming) really doesn't do them justice at all. I do think though that the clip doesn give a decent impression of a lot of what they do, a ton of influences all rolled into 4:30 minutes of absolute aural bombast. Don't understand what's not to like about this.

the problems really start at around 3:40.

I'm not saying I don't like these guys; I really appreciate that they are working hard to sort of take themselves out of the box of what a 4 piece, 2- guitar band traditionally does on a live stage. Some of the theatrics still strike me as a little pretentious, self-aware, and over-the-top. That's all.

I can buy that. I kind of like it though, again I think it shows it certain amount of respect for some of their influences. Theatre has always been a huge part of "noise", whether some of the artists that practice it will admit it or not. If you look at old John Weiss videos, or Incapacitants, or even some the gloomier metal droning like Wizard Prison and obviously SunnO))), there is a lot of "show" to it. For a band, like you said with a kind of standard set up, to knowingly engage in over the top things, like the synchronized dropping of instruments, and pedal engagements, I think in a really good way does two things; First pays homage to those acts who influenced them but exist in a substantially different music realm than these guys, and second (and most importantly to me) shows they give thought to how to translate what they do into a live environment, they could very easily just use samplers/MPCs to recreate a lot of the vocal layering they do, but they instead stand by their standard set up and find a way to make it work. Is it self aware...absolutely, but so are Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore's fits of feedback in what I think is the only band that currently outdoes HEALTH's show, and neither neccesarily detracts from what is happening musically in my opinion.

Taken out of context, that live clip does just seem like a lot of random bullshit. If you're familiar with the recorded stuff, though, it's cool to see how they translate it live, even if their uber-hipsterish looks and theatrics do seem a little embarrassing. I don't know if it's "too self-aware" or not self-aware enough.

Reactions in the audience at the beginning are pretty funny.

I really like the Ric bass, you almost can't make those sound bad. But... anytime a band just smashes away at their strings atonally for a few minutes and flops around onstage, I kinda feel like the joke's on you. The stops were tight, for what that's worth, but ... that clip isn't going to win them many new fans. Too much Serious Sauce.
