Feeding an anchor line into an electric winch. Pretty gruesome. They sewed it on but most likely will not take.

Nice, which finger?

I stabbed myself through my left index with a pairing knife, NO SHIT, trying to get a watch band off. This was Christmas of 07...i still have little to no feeling in it.

YIKES dude. That's brutal.

FemDerris sympathizes. She lost a bout with a lawnmower when she was 17 and lost about the same amount of digit that you did, only it was her big toe.

It didn't take. She's got most of it but the toenail was lost forever.

sorry if too gruesome. I'll survive, just a pain in the ass dealing with it for a little while. Thanks for the commiserating.

Wow. So if it doesn't take does it just flick off someday like a blackened fingernail? Like you'll be ordering at a restaurant, and you point to ask a question and "plop" off it comes?

Insert leeches.

I think there was a NOVA special which discussed limb amputations. Applying laboratory grown leeches to the detached and reattached limbs (specifically fingers and toes) had great outcomes -- increasing blood flow to the limb and secreting a naturally occurring anti-coagulant. Never have seen it used personally, but I sure as hell would give it a try considering I had part of my finger to lose.

Shit, Tommy - sorry to hear it! My oldest had that happen in the chain of an old exercise bike when he was two. It took, but his fingernail permanently grew all the way over the top of his finger, where it remains 12 years later.

Jesus, at this point I'd give leeches a try too. Medieval medicine probably has more to teach us.

Funny, the doctor said the younger the patient(and he said like 1 and 2 year olds) the chances are very good that the tip of finger will take. He's only seen one case where it took with a 17yo. I considered it lost the second it happened, just want it to look aesthetically not too freaky. I also had the option of saving going the leeches way, but often a transfusion is necessary ,so no thanks to that idea.

A transfusion for the leeches? Didn't know they require that much blood. I'm working in transfusion medicine right now...I'd still take the leeches. Transfusions aren't really something to worry about if you only get a few in your lifetime...I'm assuming you're past your leech window of opportunity though...
