Yeah, I'm more disconcerted to see Ole Miss, Okie State and California in successive order and in/near the top ten. It's also still bizarre seeing Nebraska, Notre Dame and FSU near the back of the Top 25 and both Washington and Miami completely out of it.

Coaches Poll is out.

It's nice to see Nebraska at #22. I'm a little surprised to see UNC there and thought BYU and Oregon State might be a bit higher. I wonder if Virginia Tech is that high due to the relative weakness of the ACC, I guess will find out when they play Bama.

Rich Brooks & Mike Riley.

Rich Brooks didn't do shit for Oregon. It was all Bellotti.

Edit: and Dennis Erickson deserves some respect for the Beavs, even if he is a dirty cheater.

He was the coach when they made their Cinderella run to the Rose Bowl, in, what '94? He was there when the UO name (re)turned to prominence in college football circles.

I suppose it's similar to Gary Barnett at Northwestern. Flew the coop shortly after the '95 (?) run for the roses, but still is the first to make NU mean something in football.

Also: since Bellotti never coached in the pros, NFaiL hardly applies. I suppose it does to Erickson, though. Twice.

I just don't think the 1994 Rose Bowl team equates to the 2001 Fiesta Bowl squad that annihilated Colorado, a team that had recently annihilated a Nebraska team that backed into the BCS title game.

Gary Barnett is a little different, and a lot like Dennis Erickson and Neuheisel. He builds up a squad by cheating and/or commits some rather nefarious acts, and then leaves town before they really get into trouble.

rich brooks really did get Oregon going but Belloti took it to the next level. oregon never had the terrible suckitude of the beavs, either.

Also, it should be noted that while I appreciate Promethium's post, pre-season CFB polls are the possibly the most useless things in all of sports.

In fact, one could argue that they serve to the detriment of the sport.

But had UGA actually delivered last year, you'd be loving it. Though I generally agree with your statement.

I actually just bought a frame for that SI cover. Even if it was FAIL, I like that cover.

Oh yeah, I mean, going wire to wire is a great story and an impressive feat but at the same time, remember how bad Auburn was last year?

They were ranked as high as #9 almost a month into the season last year.

I saw him speak the other day. If he was coming directly from being an assistant, he would be quite heralded. He's coached TWO undefeated defenses in the past 6 years. They're not going to be good this year (he openly admitted as much) but he reminded me of Richt's appearance between the hedges in what he was saying.

I hope you never expect to win any races in Ames, specifically, but Iowa, generally. (I imagine UI fans might be more forgiving of an ISU apologist, in circumstances where ISU failed so profoundly, since Hawkeyes wouldn't be able to do anything but laugh.)

It's not like ISU was some powerhouse that he failed to punch up. He started 9 freshmen, etc... If they had a semblance of an offense, they might shock some people, but man do they SUCK on that side of the ball.

Iowa State was usually pretty decent and made a few bowl games under Dan McCarney, the man who Chizik replaced. The situation at Ames is alot like the situation at Nebraska over the past decade. A egotistical AD fired a reputable coach to hire his own guy and have a Wow hire. It blew up in his face and they turned to a respectable assistant from the McCarney years.

I got a great deal on two tickets to UGA Homecoming last year on StubHub (bought Vandy student tickets and then just sat with the Rick Derris Contingent) but 1300? No way, no how.

That has to be fake. I could FLY to J-Ville, get a room for 2 nights at the Hyatt, buy 2 tix, go out both nights, buy some blow in the parking lot from "Duane from Folkston", double up on some hookers, and STILL not spend that much for Cocktail Party tix.

Don't get me wrong, it's one of the toughest tickets around but you can do it reasonably if put forth a little effort.

I'm shooting for UK as my appearance at Stanford this year, Derris. Keep my spot warm.

Not to be taken serious, but fairly realistic according to the Coaches Poll.

On a better note: Sporting News names John Wooden the greatest coach of all time. Yep.
