I remember when they took BB submissions for what would go on the spine of one issue and they ended up using mine, which was a saying my great uncle used: "Drinking non-alcoholic beer is like kissing your sister"

didn't they also put a few BB mixes in the issues as well.

Along with Zig Zag,CMJ sponsored the O'Death/Those Darlins tour that came thru town late last year.
They were passing out copies of CMJ,it was the first one I had seen in years. Kinda sad.

CMJ was great then it crashed and burned hard... This forum was started because the CMJ board became a joke with spam and crashes. Sorry to see it finally get the plug pulled but not surprised. I sent an email a couple of years ago to find out if they were still publishing and if the problems had been worked out before renewing my subscription. Of course no one responded. I'm sure they lost many customers for that same reason. Shitty customer service and failure to actually deliver the product....
Always looked forward to getting the Christmas issue touting gadgets and media around March.
I have cd 1 through the 95ish with only a few missing. Lots of discoveries and a bunch o'crap but I always looked forward to tracking down the lastest issue.
rip.. their riyl was the best.

friend of mine worked at the distributors. they junked what they didn't sell. he ended up giving me a trashed copy and i became hooked soon after.

i left because the articles weren't as interesting over time and the cd selection wasn't that great over time and they always had problems sending out magazines. (i gave them some slack post-911, but it never really became better.)

CDs are so last century anyway.

I was a dedicated CMJ reader. There wasn't a month that I didn't look forward to receiving my copy in the mail. I mean, sheesh, with writers like Whiney, Katie, Chad, and especially Frampton, it was easy to be hooked. The day Frampton left the mag was a sad day indeed.

I used to be so excited when my CD came, it was all I listened to for days

...and then they learned from their mistake and posted mine and an epoch of mixes was reached.

Wise heads now say "remember Konstantin's mix published in CMJ, what a Golden Age that was, however brief, it enriched our hearts and souls and minds and yet we dismissed it as just another mix. How foolish we were and look at us now engorged by a perpetual Dark Age. We should have made a messiah of him but we did not and now the tempest winds of our failure will bite and slash our mortal flesh forevermore."

I used CMJ every week in the mid -late 80's as a college radio MD, the stapled-in-the-corner chart 'n'' review blurb version.

Have never once read the regular magazine.

CMJ decided I couldn't read them anymore when they stopped sending me my subscription.

Bob, do you need permission to post an article that you wrote, but posted by someone else? You weren't paid.

started readng in college (94-98), joined the board in 2000. i thought the mag was great right up through 2001.

all things considered my favorite mag of all time. i didn't think they would have maintained a quality publication after scott/steve/nicole/tom/whiney left but i'm sad to see the whole op get flushed down the toilet.

Generally no. Most freelancers retain copyright/reproduction of what they've produced once it's been published, long as it's clear it appeared somewhere else first.

Awesome, and from there down it takes a turn for the downright funny Bobbo. Well done sir.

I used to get the public version when I was in high school with the CD's and I loved it. It introduced me to so much music...
later it was sort of a bible when I was a college radio MD.

Reading that Bland Original for the first time -- I think -- I realize, FT could have been David Foster Wallace. Or more reasonably, DFW turned out to be FT (since I think Bob is a coupla years older).

Just got the new issue today aswell (Dead Weather on the cover).

TJ was right. 30 pages in all, half of which are either ads or charts. It's like why even bother anymore.

Maybe it'll pick up in a few months if they're really back in the monthly business but I doubt it.

probably not, but since they're defunct, it's not like anybody would come after me, anyway

they still owe chad for stories he wrote, so it's doubtful he will be hired to off me
