A little, yeah. But I first heard it right after an interview with him where he pretty much said "I'm trying to make my mind up about being a christian or not" and he was leaning "yes," and then the album just felt like him working that question out aloud.

So taking that quote literally, which may or may not be the way he intended, I *hate* that kind of argument for a bunch of obvious reasons that are not worth going into. Why not worth it? Because the album isn't so amazing that I feel like I ought to give it the time and effort. It's patchy, sometimes catchy, sometimes awful ("peanut butter pooding surprise"). I get to decide I guess how much thought I put into it, and this is the answer.

Now I think I might hate MMJ.

Seems like that's a pretty normal question to deal with. Were you an atheist at age 5? I would imagine that at some point you dealt with that question yourself.

I still like 'em. And I agree with Bennie that this may be the best thing to come out of the 2000's, by some wierd metric.

Atheism or agnosticism I guess hit at about age 8. An yes, I did struggle with that question, but:

1. My answer was different
2. I didn't record an album about it

____

This is turning into a tell-all expose about me. I'd like to avoid that.

Summary: When I hear some of those lyrics on that particular album, it sounds like someone dealing with heavy stuff and coming up with lazy answers, crystalized into an album that shows some promise but falls short a lot. Does that answer your question in a way that will prevent you from taking my thoughts on their album and making into a thread about my thoughts on myself?

Ah, and there's the problem. Seems like from what you said that James in interview was seriously questioning his faith. Seems odd that he would just say, "oh well, I like this easy answer." Maybe the album isn't about his answer, but an exploration of the problem? The title is called EVIL URGES[. Seems like he's having a hard time reconciling the human condition to me.

I think the only thing that is lazy is your categorical "he's a jeebus lover so I don't like him."

Does Dylan's early 80s Born-Again period make you feel the same way? Granted he's a better lyricist than Jim James, but is it the fact that he's talking about Jebus or that he's earnestly dealing with a "personal/spiritual" issue out loud on record?

Well fuck, I can't believe how quickly you got to the core of me, Tanner.

I apologize Nancy. Sometimes I forget this isn't a board to discuss our thoughts on music. Let's get back to clicking yes or no on a poll because that's pretty interesting.

We all know your core is made of hemp, organic milk, and Obama posters. I didn't need this thread to find that.

Believe me, I was trying to discuss the album and music, not the age at which I decided I wasn't religious or its bearing on my impression of that album.

So, what about Peanut Butter Pooding Surprise? Tell me how I'm mentally lazy or hypocritical for not liking that one, because now I've rounded the bend past "defensive" to "morbidly curious."

Tanner is my boy. No amount of "let's pry your rocks over and peek under them" Law School Assholery he can't switch off will change that.

There is definitely a correlation of me being an asshole on Obner and Law School. Yesterday was my first day back at school.

You've really got to find a new line.

I will also freely admit that I never sat down and thought out "is it right for me to dislike this album because of feelings X, Y, and Z?" So there may well be some flaws in what I assumed after hearing that interview. But here's where we diverge, I suspect:

It's a fucking album, and one that I don't really love. So why would I be so rigorous in my ascessment of it? I didn't sit up all night sweating over In Rainbows, I just played it a few times and said "nope."

It should be noted that "Where The Devil Don't Stay" destroys everything in this thread.

Cap'n, here's a link to a mix - http://www.elasticheart.com/?p=1643
the person that made this mix Wrote:
This mix started out with lofty goals for a theme based around the life and writings of Carl Sagan, but as I progressed (or didn’t progress, as the case may be) I felt that constraint was too limiting so I loosened up the reins a little bit. You’ll hopefully now notice a more subtle running theme, touching on religion vs. reason, the infinite beauty vs. the supernatural façade—but mostly I hope you just notice the boogie.
