The song I heard on the radio sounded like the Kills on valium.

so that xx album is pretty amazing and now has a US date. "xx is scheduled to be released on October 20th in North America."

they also have some amazing cover songs:

here is their cover of Womack and Womack "Teardrops"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrVgCCUQ3fQ

and also their cover of Aaliyah "Hot Like Fire"

Loving it through track 2 is not exactly a ringing endorsement (which I guess is your point).

I've been listening to this nearly nonstop over the past couple weeks--it just gets better. I think the latter third is actually quite good---sauced and sober :)

William Fowler Collins - Perdition Hill Radio

Ambient artist who leans towards the dark side. Sounds like a soundtrack for the criminally insane in an abandoned asylum.

k, I actually picked up it up on your recommendation. Very eerie stuff. It takes some serious effort to sit through it though.

Yep. In my opinion nothing has even come remotely close to this, and there have been some great records this year. This is borderline immediate classic to me though. Like Derris said, this is brooding, black as night, scary as hell, ambient. To me he has pushed the envelope so far with this album that I don't even know I can truly call it ambient (though it is) as it is just remarkably heavy. I think you would really dig this Dalen.

Glad you at least checked it out Derris, for some really strange reason that makes me quite happy. Between knowing you listened to this, Hecker, and KFW in the past month, it appears you have really been searching some things out (or that I have just been very wrong in assuming what you listened to all this time).

will def check this out now.

k, is it similar to Svarte Greiner or Deaf Center?

Sorry Dalen just now seeing this. Yeah, it's certainly similar to Svarte's solo stuff atmospherically. I do think specifics are more pronounced in what he does than they are with Collins. Listening to Knive it's very easy to discern Cello here, woodblock there, whereas with Perdition Hill everything blends (seemlessly mind you) that at points everything becomes almost unrecognizable.

It is lacking those sort of waves and definitive movement of Deaf Center's stuff, which I think Greiner at least retains a bit of solo, but it works remarkably well for Collins.

In a slow year, Reigning Sound is by far the best thing i've heard.

It's pretty good.

sounds less pretentious than cocorosie, but also a few degrees less interesting.

6.2

I could've sworn I read somewhere that they have a new album coming out in 2009, but nothing yet. Have you heard anything?

Their album from last year was re-issued in 2009 with a bonus CD. Could that be what I read about?

YES, it's the re-issue of the Friendly Fires album:

The album was re-released on August 31, 2009. It contains an additional double-sided disc featuring 3 new tracks; "Relationships," "Bored of Each Other," and the single "Kiss of Life." It also features 4 remixes, a reworked version of "Skeleton Boy" produced by Paul Epworth and a DVD of their performance at the London Forum.

i can't believe how good that xx album is, it gets better and better and better with each listen. the album is blowing up so big that the record company has moved the release date up and is now coming out on October 6. so happy because in less than two weeks i will have it in my hands.

I can't say album of the year, yet. I'll wait until the end, but it'll be a favorite come decision time.
