I downloaded the advance single almost a week ago and keep going back to it. Needless to say I am very excited about this new album.

I haven't really listened to these guys, which is odd since they are from where I live now. But I do dig this song at least.

You should check out Four Thieves Gone and Emotionalism-both are great albums. And definitely hit up one of their shows--fantastic. They play in your locale all the time.

Yea, I know I should be more aware of these guys. The lead singer's wife was a bridesmaid in a wedding of a friend a few years back and I've seen him at restaurants around town even.

I'll check out an album next time I hit up the record store.

"Emotionalism" was my #1 album of 2007. This is the album I'm most looking forward to this year.

For those interested, this will be their major label debut on Columbia and Rick Rubin produced the album which will either be a stroke of genius or ruin this album IMO.

So far, early reports I've read have said stuff like "more mature", "fully realized music", and "big step forward". I'm a little leery of such buzz words/phrases but I suppose you can only play the amatuer card for so long.

If it's good these guys could graduate to the next level this year.

Here's the album cover:

I don't know why but whenever I read that he's producing something I'm always more interested then I normally would, but I can't remember the last time he's done something really great.

EDIT: 2008: The Cross Of My Calling – The (International) Noise Conspiracy, but while I liked it, I don't know I'd call it "great". That would be 2003, "99 Problems".

Nice. These guys seem to come play here about once a year. I always mean to go see them but stuff gets in the way.

so what are the thoughts of this from people who are into this band compared to their previous albums? from my first listen -- there are at least a few good songs, but sometimes i can't help but think that i'm listening to a nu-grass version of ben folds or something.

I haven't heard the full album yet, but did hear the 3 song sampler from iTunes and at least 4 or 5 of these new songs live last week in SLC---a little more polished, poppier sound than their previous output.

I'll reserve final judgement until I've given the whole album a few spins, but I must say that I'm a little concerned about it not being as good.

The new album is pretty damn good. It is a bit more mellow and not up to Emotionalism standards but I like it quite a bit on a few listens. The harmonies are really beatiful and their lyrics continue to be top notch. I'm really liking 'A Perfect Space'. I think you'll like it Marco. BTW what time do you want to hit Modest Mouse tonight?

I haven't listened to it yet but for years they've been getting by on pretty rowdy live shows, out of tune banjos and guitars, and almost yelling vocals vs singing.

I think I read that they really tried to stretch out as actual musicians on this. That combined with Rubin producing has had me worried. It's a fine line between being musical and using the studio and being slick.

FWIW this is their 4th album proper so they couldn't stay indie and amateur forever.

7 songs in on my first listen. Not disappointed at all so far. The 3rd track felt very polished and slick, but I still enjoyed it.
