I am sitting at desk, feigning productivity, when I notice that there is a box underfoot. Not knowing where it came from (I assume my officemate put it under his desk for the moment), I look to see what I am stepping on. The label on the box prominently states that it is "GAR 3P," highlighted in fluorescent yellow. Weird.

Perhaps weirder is that I immediately thought of this board.

Perhaps even more revealing of my character is that I bothered to mention the fact.

That is all.

Colin, GAR is a way of life. Learn it, Live it, Love it.

Yeah i remember in the P.G. (pre-Gar) era when i used to simply refer to everything as "garbage" before Dave and Benjy shortened it to "gar" i was in Athens and heard some kid say "Thats Garbage!" with the same inflection that I rightfully stole from this other dude...

i visibly stiffened.

Are you illiterate? Do you ever post on this board? Do you ever read this board?
No offense, sounds like you might be pretty Gar.

I was figuring he meant "what was in the package marked 'GAR'." At least I hope so...

A scary-looking fish often found sunning themselves near the surface of the water. There are tons of them in the Ohio River. And they are all scary.

To show how scary they are, there needs to be a picture of the inside of it's mouth. Lots of teeth.

'tis a taxydermified gar fish. Forgive the made-up word, but yes, that's what they look like.

The best was when I had a class of undergrads out seine-netting a Texas mudhole - red, red water you have no chance of seeing through, dyes your clothes UT orange, et cetera, and when we pulled up the net there were two 4' long Alligator Gar freaking out and trying to escape. All of a sudden, I was the only person in the water, and there were 19 undergrads on the bank looking at me like I was the fool.

There are muskies up here in lakes Monona and Mendota (the two that flank the capitol, making an isthmus less than a mile wide) that routinely eat swimming dogs. Big ol bastards. The power plant has an outlet of warm water all winter, and at one point every winter you can stand on the shore and watch the muskies forming a line where the warm meets the cold. Those things are HUGE.

I knew a guy in LA that was not only named "Gar", but he also had a gar-fish tattooed on his back.

I would nobly refer to him as Gartholomew.

except in LA, he was probably named after GAr, cos one tried to snatch him when he was a kid.

Kinda like, Catdick and Pickle and 'nem.

My name, and affinity for the word has nothing to do with them creepy as fish, and everything to with the fact I still, nigh on 4 years later find it hilarious when I call people GAR, and they have no idea I am calling them Garbage.

this is the weirdest fish we have - sturgeon - but they do grow to be like 10 feet or something crazy like that. they don't eat dogs though - I hope.
