It's really not that cheap. There are several cheaper alternatives, actually, but the quality is generally inferior.

Target has stuff that looks as good as IKEA for a little less, and also... Craigslist. There's tons of people in ATL with lots of money who get rid off furniture all the time.

I roundly loathe going to IKEA. But that might stem from being left in one when as a child.

No, it's also because I hate the place.

Yeah it's pretty dreadful.

It's what the wife wanted, and I don't have the time or stamina to argue.

I instituted an "I don't go with you to ikea if I'm sober" policy some 3 years back now, and it's really been the kind of win-win solution everyone can live with.

So guess where I just had to go, in a made rush to get something before they closed so we could have it for tomorrow morning. IKEA.

And... everyone was pretty nice and helpful for the most part. I managed to get in and out in about an hour. Not bad, I guess, although going in with the exact model number of the exact thing I need, you'd think it could go a little faster.

I don't mind going to IKEA if I have hours and hours to look around. I can usually never find what I originally came there looking for though and then I always see stuff I think would be cool to have and end up spending way too much money.

I wouldn't mind it if I wasn't buying stuff. But then again I always get hit with some asshole trying to balance an disassembled bookshelf on one of those carts.

does Ikea not serve beer where you live? it's great! especially when you don't feel like investing in real furniture. Their shit will keep your shit off the floor like nobody's business!

Is this the only store that people in your town go to or what? Cuz my IKEA is pretty spacious and free of people (and baby strolllers) crossing my path when I go.

it's California, so everywhere serves beer. Throwing a 60 cent hot dog into the mix doesn't make that habitrail of a furniture store any more accessible to me.

and I wasn't kidding when I said I was left in one as a child.

furniture is not fun to shop for under the best of circumstances. you always seem to know that the stuff you really want is JUST outside your budget. I can drift aimlessly through Ikea and fantasize about how I would live in a 10x10 space in grad school in sweden just fine. there's so much shit worse about california than their swedish walmarts- how can you have the energy to hate on it?

I'm sure your parents tried leaving you in a hedge maze but you'd drive 6 hours to give it another shot.

I have the energy to hate on IKEA because I've never left there less angry than when I showed up.

I actually don't mind furniture shopping, but then it's not something I've ever really had to do. I prefer to go to secondhand stores over IKEA, because the stuff tends to be sturdier and less umlaut-ridden.

that's certainly the truth- you can move Ikea furniture maybe twice before it collapses upon itself.

except for like clocks and lamps there is nothing worth buying at Ikea unless you are a starving college student living in a crawlspace

Saw that. Sucks. He's definitely one of my all-time favorite voices in baseball.

We got some downright robust steel shelves there for shoes, and a kitchen island thing with a solid maple top and legs. So it can be done, but those are certainly the exceptions to the rule.

I just hate people. And that place is invariably full of them, at all hours. It's huge, the floor plan intentionally disorients you, and then somehow 4 hours and $400 are gone. Even when I want something from them, I dread going a little bit.
