Over just three albums, Memphis power-pop O.G.s Big Star forged themselves a mythic legacy. They're the original genius pop group who never quite became popular, and their jangle has reverberated for decades in the work of every band who sought to fuse wide-eyed wonder with creeping melancholy.

Rhino Records will give Big Star their due with a massive four-CD box set that draws from virtually everything the band's members did alone or together between 1968 and 1975, including tons of previously unreleased gems. Titled Keep an Eye on the Sky, it's due out September 15.

Rhino is streaming the unreleased song "Lovely Day" on their site now.

A band that released 3 albums with a 4 CD box set? You gotta really be a fan.

To be honest, I've tried really hard over the years to like Big Star, but I never succeeded. Outside of a couple songs, this has to be one of the most boring bands I've ever heard. I really don't see where all the praise comes from.

However, I really like Chris Bell's I am the Cosmos a lot. So I'm kind of interested in it from that perspective.

Ive soured a tad on The first two albums, but Third/Sister Lovers has gone the opposite direction and I really like it now.

I am the Cosmos is also great.

However I'm not sure I have much need to ever hear this

My main reference point is Radio City/#1.

Top 10 band for me. I'll buy it even though it looks like it contains a lot of material from the first three albums.

NPR has the entire first disc of the box set streaming at their site.

At least until the set's released on the 15th.

It might have been mine, but i repurchased it.

Um... gift it to someone on the board who's looking to check them out yet but hasn't?

I was not terribly impressed with the unreleased stuff that I heard streaming at NPR.
Guess that's why it's been unreleased until now.

Chris Bell looks like Josh (Jen/Charli's husband) in this picture.
