every 9/11 there is a group of flag wavers that camp out on an overpass over Interstate 69 and wave a giant american flag over the traffic as you come into town

I was at work.
Heard the news, and assumed it was an accidental crash, until the second one hit. And then the Pentagon. And then the crash in Penn.

We found a small B&W TV in the office and set it up in an empty cube and huddled around until about 10:30 (CDT), when our boss told us to get home.

I walked to the train station, which was MOBBED. But the folks there did an amazing job of getting everyone onto the trains; filling them up and getting them out, one-by-one. I got home by about 12:30 to my 2-yr. old son and pregnant wife.

It was a beautiful day in Chicago, and we spent it outside, walking around the downtown area of a nearby suburb.

Had it not been so surreal and weird, it would have been a wonderful day.

Around 1am of Sep 11th.

My lady at the time gave me her virginity. It was beautiful.

Then my roommate called me and said that he was sorry for everything and that he had done, and that he was going to jump off the bluff. This is his birthday. I spent the next hour or so talking him out of it.

The juxtaposition of those two events had my mind spinning and I didn't sleep at all.

Then I woke up to THIS and it all seemed pretty trivial.

I hate America as much as anybody, but this was indeed a sad day.

Still the best commentary on the day.
Maybe the best socio/political satire ever. Yes, even better than The Daily Show has ever been.

it started off just like any other day...

drove to history class at about 845

there is a weird sonic effect when every car stereo in town is tuned to the same news feed. it was like an echo blowing through town.

so i figured something must be up. turned on my radio to NPR and that was that.

went to history class and, thanks to the professor, that was officially the first time i'd ever heard the words "al qaeda"

While besting the Daily Show is like playing cards with my sister's kids, there are some damn good ones here.

Are you talking about the dudes in Fishers? I find it tends to lead to lots of honking and slow driving.

I didn't have class until 1pm on Tuesdays. It was my day to sleep in and recover from those crazy Monday nights I would have (staying up late with my homework).

My roommate was dating an Indian woman whose parents lived in Hong Kong. The called her, she called him and he went out and began watching the television. I don't remember the time I woke up, but my roommate was like, "dude, you gotta see this". I headed out and saw the first tower fall. I asked him why the hell he didn't think to wake me up and he said he wasn't thinking about me while watching it. I figured that was a fair response so then I just sat down and watched the news for the rest of the day.

It was insane. I remember some documentary that came out not too long afterwards that always made me cry. It was truly a sad, sad day - regardless of the politics and the analysis of it. I don't care who you are, no one really deserves to die like that.
