Beatles For Sale

I'm really not much of a Beatles fan, particularly I can't really get into the later stuff much at all. But, the earlier albums I do like to take a listen to now and then and the mono-remasters are a nice chance to go back and give a listen to things I've not heard in ages. Anyway, this album is a nice little laid back record with a few up tempo rockers tossed in. A mix of originals and covers; it never bogs down like the later records, but it's a bit more developed and less poppy/happy than the first couple. The mono remaster (haven't heard the stereo one) sounds quite good to me. If you're disappointed in the stereo versions, you may wanna try the monos. From what I've heard, they used less compression on the monos and less EQ.

Tom Waits: Mule Variations

Personally, I'd put this album more or less in the second tier of Tom Waits records. It's not a career defining work like some of his landmark albums and start to finish it probably doesn't represent the absolute best he has done in this particular style, percussion heavy cacophony of noise and a croaking howl for vocals. But, it is still a strong record with lots of great songs. My favorites are the ones where he slows it down and gets a bit sentimental, tracks like Hold On and Come On Up To The House are both standouts for me.

After a long wait (postal strike) this turned up today -

Worrying I could probably have appeared on the front cover of this and fitted in supremely well.

The Gothic Archies - The Tragic Treasury
The Wrens - The Meadowlands
Ashtray Boy - The Honeymoon Suite

EDIT:
And, Rod...
How's that Gidget's Ga Ga record?
The leader, Michael, used to date a friend of mine from high school and is a pretty good guy. I've played with him a couple of times, and he always struck me as a good songwriter, but I've never actually heard any of their records.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen

This one holds up well for me. Liked it a lot when it came out and I still do. I can see myself returning to this when I'm looking for an appropriately moody, bass heavy melancholy sort of thing. I'm guessing this was a one off and don't know there will be anything in the future from this group. Shame. Maybe I'll get lucky and be wrong.
