Bonds may miss regular season

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Leaning his head on a crutch and repeatedly saying he was tired, Barry Bonds said he might miss the entire season following his latest knee surgery.

"Right now I'm just going to try to rehab myself to get back to, I don't know, hopefully next season, hopefully the middle of the season. I don't know. Right now I'm just going to take things slow," he said Tuesday after meeting with San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte for 1 1/2 hours.

"I'm 40 years old, not 20, 30."

The seven-time NL MVP, who returned to spring camp Tuesday following last week's surgery, made his remarks while sitting at a picnic table outside the Giants' clubhouse with his 15-year-old son, Nikolai, at his side.

Bonds said he was tired and disappointed following a winter in which he was accused of steroid use, his grand jury testimony was leaked and he had two knee operations. He blamed his troubles on the media.

"You wanted me to jump off a bridge, I finally did," Bonds said. "You finally brought me and my family down. ... So now go pick a different person."

Bonds had his latest surgery last Thursday in the Bay Area. Though the Giants have not set a timetable for his return, Conte has said it's unlikely he'll be ready for opening day.

"My son and I are just going to enjoy our lives. You guys wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got me," Bonds said. "I'm mentally drained. I'm tired of my kids crying."

Bonds begins the season third on the career homers list with 703, trailing Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755).

Last September, the Giants dropped a provision that would have allowed them to void Bonds' $18 million salary in 2006 if he failed to reach 500 plate appearances this year or 1,500 combined from 2003 to 2005, including at least 400 this year.

sadly, i agree. he'll do what he has to, to pass Ruth, then he'll have an easier decision to continue or not.....

crap, a few monts ago, I posted on here that I would trade a Yankee world championship for something bad to happen for Bonds.....crap, my fngers were crossed when i said that.

I just watched video of his comments on ESPN.com

I can't believe how one person, that I don't even know, who lives across the country, can make me so angry. He is such a piece of shit. Who the fuck does he think he is? REALLY. Yea I bet his son cries. He's gonna be crying a lot more when he grows up and finds out that the better part of his father's distinguished career has been a total fraud. And he was a part of it.

I can really honestly say that he were on my team, I would NOT be a fan of the Braves any longer. Thankfully, he isn't. Any fan of this waste of oxygen should be ashamed of themselves.

Fuck you Barry! Fuck you.

Yeah, I say he passes Ruth and then retires quietly siting "injuries"

He won't let himself pass Henry. Barry is garbage, but he is not gonna go there. If he passes Aaron, he will be discredited. By retiring at, say 720, he can maintain his legacy and survive the dreaded asterick*.

i'm just hoping this keeps him from breaking any more hr records. he doesn't deserve the ones he has (unless he's somehow innocent of steroid use)

fan loyalty goes pretty deep for Giants fans (OLD SCHOOL giants fans). i mean, i'll be the first in line to admit that Pete Rose is an unabashed piece of shit, but he's OUR piece of shit. i'd never give up a team because one of the players was an ass.

All you Bonds-haters, I hope you reserve the same vitriol for A.I.

It's just a good thing 'balling is a sport that doesn't require so much in the way of steroids/weights as do American-football and base-ball.

Bonds is a fave, still, then, and despite the 'roids. Same for David Wells (drunk), Dock Ellis (acid-eater), Steve Howe (coke-head, and closer on my very first rotisserie side, at 14 years of age (mine, not his)).

Also, do you think HST would have been the same writer without drugs -- in his case, not 'roids, and such, but cocaine, mescaline, and ether -- as he was with? Further, if you esteem Hunter, you probably think his drugs-use performance-enhancing... What's the difference between HST and Barry, then? They're both bald men with prodigious talent and chips on their shoulder, as well a fondness for the tranquility of the Bay Area... I don't see any difference.

Wow, i'm about to cut a prom on you monty---and i usually respect your opinions on sports.

People are Bonds haters, for sure, but even the biggest Barry haters respect his talent: Barry Bonds is one of the top 5-7 baseball players of all time WITHOUT the steroids. Bonds' hate is of his own creatiion---don't be a jerk, AND try to remake yourself into a likeable guy; and dont deny the syringe pock marks in your fat ass and dont deny your gigiantic 9 3/8 head.

I mean Wells and Ellis (especially Ellis) are marginal players at best: How can you compare them to Bonds?

As for HST, he was an addicted, troubled soul, but, to be honest, his prowess as a writer had more to do with his ability to "sell" himself as the gonzo character than the talent he truly posessed. Dude was a great writer but he played up the Uncle Duke character sometimes b/c it paid them damn bills. right?

Jus' sayin', Iverson is, like Bonds, a prickly, narcissistic (though not as severely so) character, and very good at what he does. He just (could, and very easily does) rub a lot of the games-going public quite the wrong way.

Now, I am not alleging he is on drugs -- outside of the doob, I doubt Iverson has much (in anything) in the way of drugging/doping experience.

But, take away Barry's link to Balco, and you have A.I. on a diamond. So, regardless the drugs, Bonds would probably still be hated by most of you... Similarly, though would you, do you hate Iverson?

i am an old school giants fan - well at least going back to the mid 80s. I still love the Giants, with or w/o Bonds.

Bonds, Wells, Ellis -- they're all characters to me. They can spring my tears, but also (and more often) hearty "huz-zahing", with their quips and (occasional, in the second and third) on-field prowess. They are very human, somewhat three-dimensional -- not the typical bubble-encrusted athlete, a la A-Rod.

As to HST: I think he would have been a great dandy had he not done the drugs -- just examine his pre-Hell's Angels oeuvre, namely in his epistles --, but the drugs put him over the top, beyond mere fop-pack denizen and into his own lead/lede.

As a Padres fan, one can imagine the rejoice and cheer spreading throughout my city. Barry is especially hated here, and met with constant boos (except from the plentiful Bay Area transplants or poseurs).

Anyway, it's nice how he can blame all his problems on the media.

Iverson is nowhere near as much of a jackass as Bonds. Maybe when he first came into the league he was a bit of a dickhead but I really think he's mellowed out a lot, excepting the recent run in with that referee. That whole rap cd nonsense was way back in 2000.

I think passing Ruth but not Aaron is his plan, but I think you've got the "why" wrong. Asterisk!
