Saw Extract and (500) Days of Summer this weekend...

Extract was entertaining, nothing more, nothing less... met my expectations.

(500) Days of Summer was pretty good, didn't meet my expectations, but my expectations were set pretty high. Overall, I could watch Gordon-Levitt & Deschanel all day long and not really get bored.

I was kind of let down by it. I don't know why. Maybe my expectations were too high.

I think we've just gotten so used to violence in movies. The ending to B&C was kind of unprecedented in that regard.

I watched it many years ago, in an attempt to see every "important" film/Oscar Nominee/etc.

I think it's an interesting comment on the period, more for what it does and doesn't do in terms of the story than being a great movie. Duckyboy has a point about the violence being unprecedented, but I think it was also the culmination of a Live Fast, Die Young, Leave a Beautiful Corpse ethos. Interesting that they had to reach back into the 30s to find proper anti-heroes to portray.

I guess that would be like someone making a hagiography of Patty Hearst at this point (~35 years after the historical facts)?

I gave a lot of though to just walking out of Extract. Completely worthless. It's not bad enough to be offensive, but it's not funny nor entertaining in the least. 100% disappointment, and I didn't go in expecting Dr. Strangelove.

I read this and usually trust Fu about stuff, yet I still went to see this last night. Total waste of time. I chuckled a two times during the whole movie, once about his bald neighbor, and once when the supervisor kept calling everyone "dinkus"...don't waste your time on this one.

9. this looked good, as in the animation is pretty sweet. but the story... yikes. it's a mess. is this actually being marketed to kids? i can't imagine taking a kid to see this and them enjoying it.

I saw a short version of 9 a few yesrs which I guess is either now part of of the whole movie or was a separate thing done before the film went into production.

Anyway... meh. Wasn't crazy about any aspect of it.

From my understanding, wasn't 9 a short animated film a student did that Burton saw and liked so much he decided to fund the making of himself?

Going to see Objectified today.

2nd film out of director Gary Hustwit's "Design Trilogy", with the 1st being Helvetica.

Yes, I think so. I wasn't sure if it was a student film, but it was definitely independently made. For that, it was relatively impressive, but it wasn't one of my favorites of all the animated student films and shorts that I saw at the time.

I'm a big fan of both actors. The fact that they've worked together previously makes the idea of them being brothers very easy, and definitely made the dialog pop back and forth.

The story is a simple one: 2 brothers working at a banana farm in rural Mexico get discovered by a soccer scout while playing a pick-up game, only one can go, and from there the story progresses to a sibling rivalry one. The story, however, isn't the main attraction. Bernal and Luna are amazing, and like I said before, bounce off each other with such ease. Bernal's character, while amazing at soccer wants to be a singer, and uses soccer only as a way to get into the recording industry. Luna, who is tied down with kids and a wife, has a gambling problem and is trying desperately just to fund his own addiction.

I was amazed though that while it deals with soccer, you see very little actual soccer being played. I guess part of that is to make the viewer imagine how great the plays are that are being described.

Watched this last night. Excellent documentary. Should be made mandatory that every North American over the age of 20 watches this film.

Fairy boring in parts, a little too long for what should be a teen comedy. From the way it was shot, it should have been more like Wet Hot American Summer.
I probably had as much fun watching the film as I would at Adventureland in Des Moines.

I thought this film was amazing. Were you looking for 100 laughs or something? Only thing I can say is that it was certainly marketed as though it were something other than it was.

I wasn't expecting much. My brother got it from Netflix, so I checked it out before it got sent back. I would agree with you on the marketing, but can't say it was amazing. I thought the plot was fairly flimsy and there were a few sub-plot issues they never really addressed. I will say that had they addressed some of the sub-plots more in depth it would have been a melodramatic mess.

I didn't, but I'm not a huge movie guy. I didn't think Office Space was the finest film of our generation or anything, but I was hoping Extract would be an amusing way to kill some time on a Sunday afternoon.

I haven't seen extract, but I didn't think idiocracy was so great. It's entertaining when it is being shown on Comedy Central on a Sunday afternoon with no football, but it isn't a very remarkable social satire as some claim it to be.

sherlock jr. this is one of the great buster keaton movies that's eluded me for a while. i finally saw it on tcm last night. it's not incredible, but i can imagine at the time the dream sequence blew people's minds. also, the jumping through the window gag had me in stitches.

Who claims that? It got pretty bad reviews and generally flew under the radar.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/idiocracy/

It wasn't shown to critics before it was released, but faired well with most of them and the audience once it was released. It didn't do much at the Box Office, but then again I don't think most Mike Judge movies have done much at the box office.

Finally saw Inglorious Basterds over the weekend, and enjoyed it quite a lot. My expectations were kinda low as I'd heard some people trashing it, but I thought it was good. Rare for me to sit through a movie that long where I didn't feel it dragging on.
