looking for rec's on the best NC bbq. we're coming into charlotte for the dolphins game in november. one buddy says Lexington BBQ #1 is the place everyone says to go to, but from what i've read online i'm not convinced. is Allen & Son in Chapel Hill worthy of the drive? any other rec's?

Unfortunately, Charlotte doesn't have great BBQ. There are a few places that are passable - Mac's Speed Shop is good and not far from the stadium or downtown/uptown (same thing) - but nothing out of this world. The Penguin is another place in town that has bbq (as well as tons of greasy southern food like fried pickles and sweet potato fries and the like) and is also not too far from downtown.

Lexington BBQ is by far my favorite bbq in the world, and is about 40 mins from town. But it is definitely worth it if you are passing through or really want to make the effort. I have never been to that place in Chapel Hill, but CH is 2 hours northeast of Charlotte, and I'd just recommend going to Lexington BBQ instead (its on the way). I'd imagine if you were going to be in CH anyways, it might be worth a shot though. There is a place in Raleigh called The Pit thats getting a lot of pub on the Travel Channel and Food Network lately if you happen to be in that part of the state as well (though Raleigh is 25 minutes east of CH and 2.5 hours from Charlotte).

if it's good enough for tommy....

thanks man, that's what i wanted to hear. we are definitely up for putting some effort, so a drive out to lexington is cool. i'd like to stay away from the triangle of hell that is Raleigh/Durham/Chapel HIll anyways
