Yeah. The national parks are great, been looking forward to this. It's typical Ken Burns but at least I guess you know what you're going to get.

I'm going on a road trip in a couple weeks and hitting a bunch of parks: Zion, Bryce, Arches, Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, and maybe Joshua Tree if time permits. Joshua Tree is the closest to me yet its the one I've never been to.

Yeah, I actually watched this last night when I would normally be asleep. Amazing.

And I agree with you, D. The wife and her mom are regailing me with Yosemite stories (they are all from Cali)

i watched a bit of last night, pretty cool so far. A lot of National Parks I would like to check out. Been to a few - Olympics, Ranier, Crater Lake, Great Smoky, Hawaii Volcanoes...but Glacier and Yellowstone are high on my list of places to go.

I can assure you that my Yosemite stories are more...colorful.

Have not been watching this as I've decided I hate Ken Burns for his liberal politics and more specifically his knob polishing of the murderous Ted Kennedy.

If you're going to be in the Zion area, would be a shame not to see Cedar Breaks. It's very small compared to Bryce or Zion, but a fantastic place, and my favorite of all the great places in SW Utah.

I've tried, but Ken Burns bores me to death.

My parents said Yellowstone is a must-see.

Ken Burns could do an entire month-long series on the debauchery at Yosemite by some of the early rock climbers @ El Cap.

Caught this last night. Makes me want to do 3 things:

1) Go camping soon.
2) Read a Teddy Roosevelt bio
3) Take more advantage of the great things my region has to offer.

As for Yellowstone, I can attest to it's beauty. I've been twice and it's pretty much incredible. A place where you really have to be aware of your surroundings because you could come face to face with a moose or elk at any given time.

I'd like to do Mesa Verde and Monument Valley someday.

I am definitely planning a week or so in Yellowstone early next year.

Watched a little of it between baby stuff, and it was as expected - beautiful, interesting, predictable Burns stuff.

maybe i'm in the minority here, but Yellowstone is close to the bottom of my list of the best NP's out there that i've visited. now of course this is like ranking the best pizza place in NYC, even the bottom half are "must-try". but seriously, way overrated. the park itself is enormous, but the "attractions" are few and far between. the grand canyon of the yellowstone is the standout. old faithful is a one and done experience. the sulfur springs are cool, but again this is a park you only spend a day at, maybe two. i went back in '95 and half the park was still re-growing from wildfires...not sure if that's gotten better. we camped there, and while waking up and unzipping the tent and seeing a herd of buffalo maybe 50 yards from us was something i won't soon forget, i've not felt the urge to go back at all. in fact, i've since gone back to Grand Teton NP -- which is maybe 20 miles south of Yellowstone -- 3 times since '95, and not even considered going a little further north one more time.

so, yes...the history, legend, etc...is worth a visit, but IMO there are so many better NP's to visit. Glacier, Olympic, all of 'em in southern Utah...the list goes on if you are looking for serious awe-inspiring natural beauty. and if we throw in Canada, Banff and Jasper top 'em all.

Is there some sort of continuity between episodes I would miss out on if I just started watching tomorrow, or should I just start watching and catch whatever I missed whenever?

EDIT: Ah, I can watch this online. I'll probably do that.

Three friends and I spent 2 weeks at Yellowstone/Grand Teton NP the summer before my senior year of college. By far the best vacation I've ever taken. I'd love to move out there and work when/if I retire.

I watched the first episode online last night. Same old Ken Burns formula, but that's fine with me. They picked the perfect person to read John Muir's words.

I can see this but I don't necessarily agree. I think the Tetons and Yosimite may have more breathtaking views and vistas but for some reason I always kind of found Yellowstone to just be more........wild? I guess. Maybe it's the abundance of wildlife that seem to be way more comfortable coming out in the open or something.

So is there anywhere you go for vacation that you DON'T have bears and moose and such come waltzing out in front of you, posing for pictures?

see, i would say the opposite...way more wildlife in the Tetons due to far fewer crowds. except for the buffalo. the buffalo are everywhere in yellowstone. but on just about any visit to the Tetons, i've enountered moose, bear, bald eagles and once even a gray wolf. suffice it to say the whole region is teeming with wildlife.

[double post?]

I started watching from Ep 3 last night and had no trouble getting up to speed. If anything, KB documentaries can start out slow sometimes.
