Generators getting carted from some port in Maryland to Three Mile Island's nuclear power plant. They're freakin' huge and move only a few miles per hour. The entire trek that would take a normal car 2-3 hours tops is taking 2 weeks. Roads have to be closed, a crew goes in front and takes down power lines, then a crew in the rear puts them back up, bridges are re-inforced to handle the weight... bridges are BUILT as needed.
My dad is working on this project for a reactor down here that's going from Richmond to lake ana. apparently the containment vessels weigh something like a million tons.

Pretty fucked up, but I imagined worse. The trunk was dented right in and the rear windshield shattered. The dog was 50 lbs. Virtually no blood, and it survived, but they put it down due to internal injuries. I'll see if I can get a photo of the car.

We just got hit by another dust storm.

This time the dust came from some place else, and it was a paler, finer, grey dust, and not so greasy. Looks more like fog.

Less visibility, but less dust on everything too, and it doesn't make me cough so much...

This is stupid. We've never had a dust storm like this in my memory. Coming off the wettest, coldest wet season in history, then the dryest, hottest dry season in decades. Bushfires everywhere all year long. Now this. We've sure had some crazy weather going on here lately...

I took some photos of the second storm for y'all:

And photographers in Sydney, where the dust is redder, are having a field day:

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Epworth United Methodist Church has strong roots, dating back to its founding in 1935, but its members welcome a break from tradition.

That break can be no more easily personified than with pastor David Weekley.

"We liked him from the beginning," said church member George Azumano.

More than two years ago, the Reverend Weekley became the church's pastor. It wasn't until just a month ago, in a sermon to his congregation of about 220, that he revealed a secret.

For Weekley, "you could have heard a pin drop," he said. "It had been 27 years, but now felt like the time."

For Robbie Tsuboi, who was there in the pews, "this was the sermon, of his life."

Weekley was born a woman, but never quite felt female. In his early 20s he under-went surgery to become a man.

A few years later he became ordained - all the while, keeping his transition a secret. He said he really did not think there would be an issue.

"Then I realized that the church could have issue with it and try to strip my ordination," he said. "And that's when I decided not to talk about it publicly until I discerned how to handle that."

Weekley said it became very stressful keeping this secret over the years. As such, he said he was essentially living in isolation. It wasn't until recently, after winning an award for his anonymous blog entries about inclusion for all people in the church, that he came out.

"The congregation accepted it without question," Azumano said.

For the congregation, they are indeed taking it in stride.

"I was surprised, because I had no idea," said Tsuboi, "but I was really happy he was going to get this off his chest and be relieved. It's a burden to carry that all by yourself."

Weekley said the support has been overwhelming, and he hopes his experience will help others. However, his ordination could be on the line. He said the United Methodist Church could pass legislation to ban transgender clergy in 2012.

"I hope I have time to talk to people, to help educate, to do whatever I can to be an advocate," he said.

Oh, don't fret. The last congregations & parishes, synagogues & mosques, will be converted to ashrams & druidian sanctuaries any time now.

SALEM, Ore. - A Salem man was sentenced Monday for violating a restraining order placed after he shocked his four children with electric dog collars. He received 36 months probation for the shockings and 60 days in jail for the restraining-order violation.

According to court documents, 41-year-old Todd Marcum violated the restraining order, restricting him from contact with his children, on Aug. 29. Marcum was booked for the electric shock-collar incident in early May and was apparently out on bail when he contacted his children again. He was rebooked into the Marion County Correctional Facility Aug. 30, according to inmate data.

The Statesman Journal reports that his wife, Dawn Marcum, said in court today that at least two of the children wanted their dad at home, not in jail. She asked Marion County Circuit Judge Mary James to give her husband a chance to reform by taking parenting classes and undergoing counseling.

Marcum's attorney, Deputy District Attorney Jodie Bureta, argued in court that the man's actions were dictated by the fact that the pornography found in his home has "warped his mind into thinking his actions were OK."

Marcum reportedly addressed the court, apologizing and pledging to reform for the sake of his family. That goal reportedly is reflected in Marcum's sentence.

"Do what is right," the judge told Marcum before he was escorted out of the courtroom in jail blues and chains.

Woman Stabbed Dog To Death In Bathtub

Cassandra Lauderdale, 23, was arrested Sunday on an animal cruelty charge resulting in death.

Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the home after witnesses reported that Lauderdale was in the bathroom with a knife and had just killed her dog.

According to an arrest affidavit, when deputies arrived and asked where her dog was, Lauderdale replied, "I killed the b----." Lauderdale also said she had the right to kill the dog and it was nobody else's business.

One witness told deputies he saw Lauderdale drag the dead dog out of the bathroom and heard her say she buried the body. Another witness said he saw her drag the yelping dog into the bathroom and that she changed her clothes before deputies arrived.

Deputies said they searched the bathroom and found a bloody knife in the sink, bloody towels and bloody clothes strewn about the room. A dog collar and leash were also found.

According to the affidavit, Lauderdale took deputies to the spot in the back yard, where they found the carcass.

One of the few black police officers in London, Delroy Smellie, has been charged with assaulting a woman at a demonstration.

Loads of white police officers who were caught on news footage whacking the shit out people, and in one case actually killing someone in an unprovoked attack apparently aren't going to be charged.

Request: Can this be the "local news that isn't about animal cruelty" thread? Because that shit really gets me down.

Man gets 18 months for pellet gun hot dog theft

September 28, 2009

WORCESTER, Mass.—A Massachusetts man who stole a hot dog from another man sitting under a tree in a park has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Antonio Judd pleaded guilty Monday in Worcester Central District Court to charges including larceny from a person. Police said Judd grabbed the hot dog in August after flashing what appeared to be a gun in Elm Park in Worcester, New England's second-largest city.

Police reports say Judd began to devour the hot dog, spilling mustard all over his shirt. They say when he was arrested later he was carrying a pellet gun and a pocket knife.

Records show Judd has been sentenced to prison at least three times for offenses including assault and vandalism.
