I think she actually improved herself in the first couple of albums after Guyville.

If I wanted to listen to Moon Safari 2, I would listen to Zero 7.

i've been saying this since the virgin suicides soundtrack.

Just so happens to be my favorite release by them. I gave up after 10,000 hz

it must be really annoying to artists when people are always "omg, like, i hope their new stuff sounds like their old stuff".

What if the Stone Roses carried on in a good ol' regular rock direction and after 5 or so albums had finally succumbed and just started aping Black Oak, would the same still apply?

if they put out another album exactly like their debut, i would not be happy about it. i want bands to shift gears once in awhile, not just rehash shit.

I don't know Dale, perhaps it's moot to speculate but considering how effusive you are regarding their debut, I suspect a radical shift in sound, particularly towards something you disdain, would have left you unsatisfied.

it's almost like they're acknowledging air hasn't done anything worthwhile in over ten years.

uh, no it's not.

well, i don't know about you, but in the world i live, it comes off as strange for a record label to use a quote essentially saying "every time this band puts out a new album, the initial hype is that it's a return to what almost everyone agrees is their best material. that hasn't been true. this time it might actually be true."

first of all, that's a pfork review, not from the band. approved yes, but they're not saying it, a reviewer is. the reviewer is not entirely wrong, as quite a few of these tunes sound similar to their earlier works.

saying that they might be returning to a previous sound does not say that "anything they've done in between isn't worthwhile". that's just dumb.

i'm not saying they haven't had their moments this decade. (see: that i actually like 10,000hz legend.) all i'm saying is it's a bizarre press quote to put on promo materials, especially on the heels of every other air press blitz coming down to "well, is it like moon safari or not?"

I see what yr getting at. I agree on the outset it is odd, and perhaps demeaning to the band...but, on the other hand when someone draws parallels to what the band has to know is a fan favorite, and probably their biggest seller, then it makes sense. From a marketing pov at least. I mean, how many people in this thread have said "Oh, I gave up after...." When you put a quote on it that says "Moon Safari" then people might pick it up that haven't since.

i think it's interesting though, in that both debuts set the bar so high for each band, it's inevitable that everything that followed would be measured up against them. we are definitely fortunate that the stone roses burned out after second coming, or else i don't think DJ was too far off the mark.

i'm listening to the new air right now, and it's fine, ok, not horrible, etc...but you seriously cannot tell me that anything they've done post-moon safari can hold a candle to "la femme d'argent" (possibly the second best opening song ever, next to "adored" obv. ), "all i need" or even "sexy boy" or "kelly watch the stars".

oh and the best Air album since Moon Safari is this:

they did all the music more or less so it's pretty much Air with Charlotte's vocals.

virgin suicides was my initial air portal. great album. i agree 10K Hz was completely half-assed, but i thought they brought it back around with talkie walkie

the more time i spend with this album, the more i'm realizing just how fucking great it is. some of it is very different for them, and reminds of me Pink Floyd, and even Dungen. i love how varied it is.

listening to this tonight the new album sure has a 60's influence and a hippie vibe to it that I didn't expect

Agreed.

I love Air, but they've disappointed me too many times.
I blame them for releasing a flawless debut record. :D

About 6 songs I really dig. That "Missing" song kinda throws the album off track imo. It's the only one I really do not like.

It got raped in Pitchfork today. I don't think it is all the bad after a solid listen. I tend to like it when they use vocals with limited effects rather than robot voices and ethereal effects overlayed on top of vocals.
